Homes and buildings across North Cork to benefit under govt energy retrofit scheme

- BILL BROWNE

ALMOST 50 local authority homes in Mallow are to upgraded under a government sponsored scheme aimed at making them more energy efficient.

Over the coming months the homes at Croke Place, Lisheen Row, Sean Moylan Park, Connolly Avenue, St Patrick’s Place, Sullivan’s Place and Bolster Terrace will undergo works funded under the 2017 Better Energy Communities Scheme.

Under the scheme, operated by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), grant funding of €26 million has been approved for 44 projects across the country to help cover the cost of retrofitting non-energy efficient homes and buildings.

Works to be done at the Mallow houses will include the installation of air to water heat pumps, external wall insulation, the replacement of doors and windows and roof ventilation & insulation.

Welcoming the funding, Cllr John Paul O’Shea (Ind) said the works would be of huge benefit to residents.

“Not only will it make their homes more energy efficient, it will also help the families involved reduce their energy and fuel cost in the future,” he said.

Under the scheme a number of community and commercial buildings across the north Cork region will also undergo a wide range of upgrades including the installation of heating systems, lighting, solar heating and insulation.

These will include works at community centres in Rockchapel, Donoughmore and Hillview Drive; Ballyhass and Cullen National School; Meelin GAA Club, Kanturk Rugby Club and Donoughmore Sports Complex; The Hibernian Hotel and the Ballyhoura Apple Farm.

Cllr O’Shea said that more than 15,000 homes and almost 300 community energy projects had received funding under the scheme over the past five years, supporting more than 700 direct and indirect jobs across the country.

“The north Cork region has received its share of funding from the scheme over the years and I am delighted to see that a number of projects across the area have been included this year,” said Cllr O’Shea.

“The various buildings that will benefit from this initiative will now be more comfortable, healthier and cheaper to light and heat,” he added.
