U14 hurlers in Féile semi-finals

THE Evening Echo Feile U14 hurling group stages took place around the county on Saturday last.

Cucullains (Kanturk) were in group 2B which was played at Fermoy. In their opening game the Kanturk lads got the better of a fancied Watergrass­hill on a 2-13 to 1-7 score line.

In their second game, Cucullains (Kanturk) were made to work hard before getting the better of Granard Gaels on a 3-5 to 2-4 score line.

In the quarter-final they got the better of the home side on a score line of Kanturk 3-16 Fermoy 0-2.

The semi-finals and final are down for decision on this Saturday 27th May at Ballincoll­ig with Cucullanin­s meeting Clonakilty and Ballinhass­ig facing Bishopstow­n both at 2pm and the final will follow at 3pm. DUHALLOW GAA: Kanturk went down to Rockchapel in a home Nevin Cup (JBFL) tie played on Wednesday last, 17th May.

Attention now turns to the Singleton Cup JBHL with two home games down for decision. On Thursday 25th May, Kanturk are at home to Meelin at 7.45pm and on Wednesday next 31st May, Kanturk host Kilbrin at 8pm. THE LATE BENJY RIORDAN: The sad death took place on Friday last of Benjy Riordan, Freemount Rd, who was a sub with the Kanturk Junior hurling team that won Duhallow and the Cork County Junior Hurling Championsh­ip in 1969.

Benjy was also goalkeeper for the Kanturk U21 hurling team that took Duhallow honours in 1971 and was cúl Báire on the Kanturk team that lost the Duhallow Junior Hurling Championsh­ip final in 1977 to Meelin.

He continued to play for Kanturk into the early 1980’s. Ar deis Dé go raiomh a anam.

INTER COUNTY: All in Kanturk GAA were walking ‘on air’ on Monday after the Cork Senior hurlers’ wonderful Munster Championsh­ip victory over Tipperary at Thurles on Sunday last.

Kanturk’s Anthony Nash and Lorcain McLoughlin contribute­d to the Cork victory in a significan­t way and while county championsh­ip fixtures for the club will be up in the air Cork now look forward to a Munster SHC semi-final tie with Waterford at Thurles on 18th June.
