Crowds flock to tubrid and maintain ages old tradition
LARGE crowds are flocking to Tubrid Well, sited close to Millstreet Town, during the month of May to maintain a long time tradition of paying the rounds with its long traditional end of May Mass taking place on this Friday at 7.30pm.
Though a constant flow of young and old convene on Tubrid and its Lourdes Grotto to Our Lady throughout the year, it reaches a peak during May for patrons to gather, pray and sample holy water with confirmation of cures for the handicapped and ill.
Tubrid is the second largest well in Britain and Ireland, 40 feet in diameter as an abundance of clear spring water gushes up all seasons of the year from a source that supplies Millstreet Town and its hinterland.
Thanks to the efforts of a voluntary Tubrid Well Committee, significant improvements are hailed by visitors in the provision of a better road service, extra car parking, seating, lighting at Grotto and Access Road, toilets to the publication of a picture post card in association with Millstreet Museum.
Numbers are ever increasing to Tubrid and a traditional round consists of three visits to the well any Thursday, Friday or Saturday during the month of May.
According to tradition, a visitor catching a glimpse of a fish in the well is sure of a favour to be granted. The place of pilgrimage for hundreds over recent weeks, visits to Tubrid will climax in the staging of the annual outdoor Mass hosted on this Friday night commencing at 7.30pm.
