Newmarket Girl National School were the winners of a prestigious award from the World Irish Aid Awards, which seek to establish a greater understanding of the third world among Irish students.

The school won the Special Distinction Award from the group for their project, entitled “The Importance of the Global Goals in Improving Life in Uganda.”

The project, undertaken by third and fourth class students at the school, was inspired by one pupils mother, who had worked as a teacher in Uganda.

They designed poster, comic sttrips , timelines, storyboards and presented them to different classes.

They also created a factfile on what daily life was like in Uganda, brainstormed what life would be like in Uganda in 20130 and how those changes would be implemented.

The World Aid Awards act as an education tool and are currently promoting the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development 2016-2030, who’s goals are to end all forms of poverty throughout the planet, end hunger and provide sustainable agriculture, ensure healthy lifes and healthy well being, fighting climate change around the world and restoring damaged ecosystems as well as reducing global income inequality and many more.

Now in it’s 12th year, the awards have seen over 1,300 schools participate throughout Ireland
