Hardy bucks tackle Carrauntoohil
THE walking boots were laced up and the sunglasses and backpacks at the ready as just shy of 40 climbers who took on the might of Carrauntoohill all in aid of Kanturk Community Hospital and the Irish Cancer Society.
The weather Gods brought glorious sunshine on Sunday, May 28 as the climbers who consisted of members of the three local hillwalking clubs all took part.
The climb was organised by Ger Morrissey, Padraig Breen and Kieran Fitzgerald with help from the other local clubs who helped out in their own way by organising group leaders who each took responsibility for about 15 climbers and made sure they not only got to the top but equally so the bottom of the mountain in one piece.
The group of 39 set out from Cronin’s Yard and the decided route was to go via O’Shea’s Gully. When everyone got to the top, it was truly a sight to behold – a crisp clear sky and the sun lashing out its rays.
While everyone got their fill of the view, the task was then at hand to make their way back down, with most who opted for the Devil’s Ladders – while it is the shortest route, climbers earn it on the way down.
“On behalf of the organisers we thank all those who helped out, the climbers who took part plus those who could not make the rescheduled date as the first date was cancelled due to a weather warning,” said Mr Breen,
When everyone was back on Duhallow ground, it was time to go to the Alley Bar for some well earned food which was kindly sponsored by local shops and which was organised by Nuala McCarthy, Margaret O’Keeffe, Geraldine Murphy and Eilish O’Connor.
