Dromina win thriller after extra-time with Kilworth

THIS game Castletown­roche on Saturday evening was a thriller.

Dromina got off to a perfect start with Diarmuid Buckley very impressive on the ‘40. Kilworth had their opening score in the 10th minute. Dromina got on top and they built up a double scores lead after 21 minutes when Michael Naughton pointed 1-7 to 0-5.

The same player added another rapid point. Kilworth got back into contention when a long range free by Will Twomey was finished to the net by Sean Beecher. In the closing moments good play by Paddy Burke and Donal O’Shaughness­y led to a well taken Pat Hayes point that had Dromina ahead at the break 1-9 to 1-5.

Both sides swapped points on the resumption with Kilworth getting their second goal by Sean Beecher 1-11 to 2- 6. Cormac Donnellan ‘65 and James O’Shaughness­y swapped a point.

There was a further exchange of points up to the 50th minute when Sean Beecher soloed through and levelled for the first time at 1-13 to 2-10. Kilworth edged ahead for the first time when Justin Aherne placed Brian Tobin for a well taken point. Cormac Donnellan followed with two more points soon after 2-13 to 1- 13.

Dromina battled very hard, both sides exchanged two points each. Dromina were reduced to 14 players in injury time as the game stood in the balance 2-15 each. Kilworth were wide from a difficult free deep in injury time so extra time was needed.

In extra time Dromina called out the youthful David Jones who was tied up with exams. Jones made his presence felt. The sides were again deadlocked at 2- 16 and 2-19 each.

In the closing moments Dromina finished strong with two late points by David Jones one from a free that saw them emerge winners by a very narrow margin.
