County League wins for Fermoy and Kilworth

COUNTY IHL DIVISION 1 Fermoy 1-14 Cloyne 1-12

A GOAL by David Geary in the 57th minute proved vital as Fermoy recorded a close win over Cloyne in the Rochestown Park Division 1 County IHL at Fermoy on Wednesday evening.

Both sides fielded near full strength. They were level on five occasions in the first half with never more than four points separating them. Brian Walsh and David Geary exchanged opening points with Paudie O’Sullivan and Liam Coleman making it 0-2 each after eight minutes.

Liam Coleman edged Fermoy in front from a free after a foul on Martin Brennan. The East Cork side were back on terms when Diarmuid O’Sullivan was fouled and his brother Paudie made it 0-3 each.

They were also tied at 0-4 and 0-5 by the 25th minute. In the closing moments good play by Ashley Walsh led to a point by Brian Walsh 0- 6 to 0-5 in favour of Cloyne at the break.

On the restart Cloyne moved 0-8 to 0- 5 ahead. Good work for Fermoy by Kieran Morrisson led to a well taken point by Shane Aherne. Liam Coleman with free cut the lead to a point.

Midway through the half Cloyne had their goal when Brian Fleming worked well for Colm O’Sullivan who netted 1-9 to 0- 8. By the 54th minute Fermoy with points by Liam Coleman (3) and John Geary were back within a point 1-10 to 0-11.

Good play by Ronan Morrisson led to a goal by David Geary that gave Fermoy a lead 1-12 to 1-10. Eoin Clancy worked well for Liam Coleman who struck a fine point. Paudie O’Sullivan and John Ring swopped a late point before Eoin O’Sullivan had the final score of the evening.

It was a very good work out for both sides with Cloyne meeting Kilworth in the County Premier IHC this week end and Fermoy playing Tracton in a few weeks time.

Kilworth 1-17 Blarney 0-16

KILWORTH maintained their good form on Tuesday evening when they had a close win over Blarney in Kilworth.

Exchanges were very close all through with Kilworth’s goal by Ned O’Brien just before half time a crucial score. The sides were level at 0-2, 0-3 and 0-4 each by the end of the first quarter.

David Twomey with a long range pointed free edged Kilworth in front again. They followed with two pointed frees by Noel McNamara and Will Condon to go double scores 0-8 to 0-4 ahead.

Blarney fought back well. A long range free by Sean Crowley found Conor Murphy who pointed. The Muskerry side were back within a point when Dan White and Alan McEvoy added points 0-8 to 0-7.

Just when it looked as if Blarney were going to get on top it was Kilworth who finished well. James McCarthy soloed through for a point. Alan McEvoy replied soon after. In the 29th minute good play by Will Condon and Jeremy Saich led to a well taken goal by Ned O’Brien that helped the winners to an interval lead 1-10 to 0- 8.

Noel McNamara and Alan McEvoy exchanged a pointed free on the resumption. Good play by Stephen Sheedy led to a Blarney point by Shane Mulcahy. Mulcahy followed with a pointed free 1-11 to 0-11.

By the 42nd minute Kilworth were 1-12 to 0-12 clear. There was a further exchange of a point that saw Kilworth leading 1-13 to 0-13 entering the final quarter. Noel McNamara with a free was followed by a very good point by Cormac Donnellan as Kilworth moved five points clear. Jamie Sheehan struck a good Kilworth point in the 52nd minute.

Blarney tried very hard but the Kilworth backline held firm. Blarney keeper Conor Murphy saved well from Cormac Donnellan. Shane Mulcahy with two frees closed the gap 1-16 to 0-15.

In the closing moments David Twomey landed another long range pointed free with Alan McEvoy pointing a late ‘65 for Blarney.
