Mitchelsto­wn fall just short in entertaini­ng contest

BANDON and Mitchelsto­wn played an entertaini­ng game at Mitchelsto­wn on Thursday evening.

Both sides were short some key players. Bandon took the lead with early points by John Mulcahy and John O’Connell. Good play by Shane Cahill led to ‘Town’s opening score by Sean O’Sullivan. Michael Walsh with a free levelled.

Good play by Lorcan Finn led to a Stephen Fox point. Bandon were back on level terms when Darren Crowley and Alan Johnson worked well for Barry Collins who pointed. Mitchelsto­wn keeper Luke Hanna saved well from Jason Hickey in the 16th minute.

Mitchelsto­wn took the lead again when Shane Cahill and Pa Magee worked well for James Sheehan who kicked over. Bandon edged ahead when Barry Collins got in behind the defence to score a great goal. Points were exchanged up to half time with Bandon holding an interval lead 1-8 to 0- 9.

Early in the second half John Mulcahy added a point for the Carbery side. Sean Walsh replied for Mitchelsto­wn. John Mulcahy added another point with Michael Walsh pointing a free in the 48th minute – 1-10 to 0 -12.

Mulcahy continued to do very well for Bandon adding another point. In the 51st minute good play by Philip Crowley led to a Barry Collins point 1-12 to 0-12. Bandon closed out the game with a Darren Crowley point from a tight angle.

The west Cork side forced a late penalty. Darren Crowley’s well executed penalty was well saved by Luke Hanna. In the closing moments Darren Crowley with a free gave his side a five point win. Mitchelsto­wn have yet to play Ballydesmo­nd, Kinsale and Kildorrery.

They need to win at least two of these games to make the knock-out stages.
