GAA ACTION
KILLAVULLEN V BELGOOLY: On Friday night last, in picturesque Gleann Na Laoi, Killavullen defeated Belgooly in the =BC final of the Cork County Junior B Hurling championship, on a final score of 3-23 to 0-01.
This was a very one sided game, and very few things went right for Belgooly on the night. Killavullen attacked from the off, and Barry Murphy had a point in the opening minute. He had a free to score in the second minute, and Ian O’Gorman scored a long range point in the fifth minute. Barry got in on goal, and duly scored after good work from Séamus Fox to set up the score, through David Brosnan. Barry got another point, before Tom O’Regan, who went on to have a very fine game, scored in the seventh minute. Belgooly had a chance at the other end, but it went wide, and Barry, and then Seán O’Regan rifled over further points.
Séamus Fox got a long range effort on target in the 15th minute, and the next score came from Ian O’Gorman in the 22nd. Belgooly got in for a goal chance, but Pa Sheehan and Stephen Rice combined to clear the danger. Liam Cronin then scored a lovely point from midfield and immediately afterwards, a pass from Kevin Fox to his brother, and a quick exchange released Liam for a delightful score. Charlie Lillis finished our scoring in the first period, with a point from a difficult angle in the 29th minute to bring our half time tally to 1-12 to 0-00.
That score line was unfair on our opponents who did create some scoring chances, but with a numbers of new participants in the team, with others opting out to concentrate on their Leaving Certificate exams next Wednesday, the defence was in mean mood form.
On the resumption, Liam Cronin was to the fore again, and scored in the second minute, Ian followed up also immediately with another point. Seán O’Regan was next to score, before Liam signed off for the night with a point in the seventh minute of the half. Having received a knock to the leg, the selectors withdrew him, and introduced the exciting James Fitzpatrick, with 22 minutes left on the clock in this half. Séamus Fox was now paired with James in midfield and the two of them combined for Séamus to score in the 12th minute. Tom O’Regan then caught a high ball under pressure, and set off to score a nice point in the 13th minute.
The next score was also a significant one, when Barry Murphy and Seán O’Regan combined along the end line, for the latter to score another goal. 2-18 to 0-00 was the score at this stage. This was also the queue for a raft of changes. Barthly Hayes was introduced for David Brosnan, Garry Lane came on for Barry Murphy, Pa Cronin was introduced for the impressive Billy Norris, and Alex Notter came on for Tom O’Regan.
The substitutes did not weaken the team, and this was exemplified by Alex Notter, whose long sessions in the gym while he recovered from his cruciate operation has certainly made this player desperately strong, and that coupled with his natural ability, has him firmly focussed on working his way bay into the starting 15. Ian O’Gorman was set up by Séamus Fox for a point in the 17th minute of the half, and Belgooly got a score from a free in the same minute. Barthly Hayes caught a fine delivery in and around the square and finished to the net with a weak shot, but crucially, it was on target to bring the score to 3-19 to 0-01. James Fitzpatrick rifled over an impressive point in the 22nd minute of the half, before the final two scores came, courtesy of the impressive Séamus Fox, and equally impressive Patrick Angland. The final score was 3-23 to 0-01. There will be tougher games ahead, in this competition, not least than against Rathpeacon in the semi-final but with competition for places very strong at the moment; it creates very welcome headaches for the management team of Barry, John Hartnett, Tommy and John Brennan.
The team and those who scored were; Michael Cronin Stephen Rice Pa Sheehan Paddy Nagle Billy Norris Kevin Fox Patrick Angland (0-01) Séamus Fox (0-03) Liam Cronin (0-04) Tom O’Regan (0-02) Ian O’Gorman (0-04) Seán O’Regan (1-02) Barry Murphy (1-05) David Brosnan Charlie Lillis (0-01). Substitutes: James Fitzpatrick (0-01) for Liam Cronin Barthly Hayes (1-00) for David Brosnan Gary Lane for Barry MurphyPa Cronin for Billy Norris Alex Notter for Tom O’Regan.
Our Leaving Certificates students, Eoghan Buckley, Gearoid Sheehan, and Jack O’Connor sat out the game, so when these lads are available, it will be a tough job to pick the team but we wish them well in their studious endeavours, that begin next Wednesday.
PATRICIAN ACADEMY
Killavullen boys had a great win in County Football Final with the Patrician Academy in Blarney on Friday, June 2. The opponents were Carrigaline Community School. With a score line of 1314 to 2-04, the game was a bit lop-sided, but it is a nice way to win, and did not give the players, their parents, and indeed grandparents any anxious moments. The Killavullen participants were Shane Walsh, Séamus O’Mahony (Captain), Seán Palmer and Michael Cagney. Conor Griffin, also from Killavullen had played in earlier rounds of the competition, but is slowly making his way back to playing, after his recent injury.
STATE EXAMINATIONS
Best of luck to all of the Killavullen players who will be sitting down to their Leaving and junior certificate exams, which begin on Wednesday, June 7. Always remember, that tests are not fair. Those that study have an unfair advantage. It has always been that way.
