JOHNNY MURPHY BREAKS 600M RECORD

The past weekend has been one of an overabundance of athletics competitions. For instance, on Thursday 1st June we had the Cork County Primary Schools Championship. On Saturday 3rd the Munster Juvenile U9 to U13 Championships at Ennis with day 2 on Sunday 4th. Also on Saturday, the All-Ireland Secondary Schools took place at Tullamore and the Cork City Marathon was held on Sunday, and just in case anyone might be left out Liscaffin Sports were held on Bank Holiday Monday 5th. Having such a selection of events to report on does not make it an easy task as some of our club members have been involved in at least two of them.

In the Munster U9 to U13 Championships, Johnny Murphy (U12) competed in three events each day. He was unsuccessful in long jump and turbo javelin on Saturday, but won a well timed and well run 600m to take the gold medal. On Saturday he finished third in the high jump, but was out of luck in the shot put and sprint. Johnny’s time of 1’42”81 set a new Munster Record.

Also on Saturday Lauren and Sarah Finnegan competed unsuccessfully in the 60m sprint but by jumping well they won the team medals in the long jump. Sarah jumped 3.39m and Lauren 3.28m making a combined total of 6.67 metres.

CIARA SHEEHY BREAKS SCHOOLS SHOT RECORD

At a very highly contested Irish Schools All-Ireland Ciara Sheehy was really on top of her game when she threw a massive distance of 15.58 metres in the Shot Put smashing the old record by 2.00 metres. She later went on to win the hammer event with a 49.59m throw.

Aoife O’ Sullivan competing in the High Jump was the winner at 1.60m.

Vickie Cusack won bronze in the Javelin with a throw of 31.24m.

Two more club members Hollie McCarthy, 60m Hurdle, and Amy Whelan, Javelin, were competing up an age and were not in the medals. Amy threw a new personal best of 37.97 metres.

Joe Ivory, Javelin, was unable to compete due to an injury received at Munster level.
