Kanturk side lifts Lár Tíre Trophy after féile win in Kilkenny
CUCULLAINS (Kanturk) U14 hurlers had an historic weekend in Kilkenny at the John West Feile na nGael Festival of hurling.
On Friday last, 16th June, the team and management paraded through the town before departing for Kilkenny. Cucullains qualified for Féile na nGael Division 6 A to represent Cork. They headed off to Rower In-istioge, Kilkenny where they received a warm welcome by their host team. By Saturday evening they had finished top of their group after 3 unbeaten games in their group. They progressed out to the quarter finals where they met Crossabeg-Ballymurn from Wexford, beating them 2-09 to 0-2. Sunday morning they set out again for the semi-final against Emeralds, Kilkenny, again winning 3-8 to 1-2. Like a dream they found themselves heading to Nowlan Park, Kilkenny’s home of hurling to take on Oylegate Glenbrien of Wexford.
This was the hardest won game as the opposing team fought hard, taking the lead by a point at half-time. After a very close first half the Wexford side goaled on the call of half time to take a 1-3 to 1-2 interval lead.
Our team composed themselves during the half time break and equalised on the resumption before going on to pick off the points to record a famous victory on a 1-07 to 1-4 score line.
The lads played in extreme heat but never gave up and have brought the Lár Tíre Trophy home to Kanturk for the first time.
They were welcomed home by a crowd of well-wishers and marched through the town to their clubhouse, led by a piper, and the atmosphere was electric. They had a small celebration then home to bed, tired and happy. The team and management wish to extend their gratitude to everyone that supported, whether by sponsorship, travelling to the game or lending a hand with the organisation.
