Telling the stories of county Cork’s majestic castle’s
PUBLIC URGED TO SEND IN THEIR PHOTOS AND STORIES FOR NEW BOOK
SUBMISSIONS are being sought from the public for inclusion in a new book that will tell the stories behind some of the many magnificent castles dotted around the county.
The book will be the latest instalment of the County Council’s ‘Heritage of County Cork’ publications series, which recently received a citation of excellence in the Local Government Awards.
Conor Nelligan, heritage officer with Cork County Council, the county is steeped in heritage, “particularly with regard to the castles that dot, and indeed define, the landscape”.
“From the arrival of the Normans, right though to the 17th century some wonderful castles have been constructed and theirs is a fascinating history that needs to be told,” said Conor.
“This next publication in the series will tell the story of Cork’s many fascinating castles and their associated families, also touching on a range of typical castle features including many fine examples that can be visited today across the county,” he added.
Conor said one of the most important elements of the publication, if not the most important, will be the input of local heritage groups and enthusiasts.
“Previous publications in the series have benefited from the huge number of public submissions that have included photographs, stories and lists of recommended sites that should be featured. We would be delighted to see a similar response on 2017,” he said.
“So, if there are any castles in your area that you feel would warrant inclusion, we would welcome any specific information, photos and stories you have to share.”
These can be sent to either conor.nelligan@corkcoco.ie or martin.mellerick@corkcoco.ie by Friday, June 30.
“All submissions will be given due consideration and it is anticipated that a significant number of them will feature in the publication, which will be due out later on in the year,” said Conor.
