Mitchelstown to milk Old Butter Road’s heritage
MITCHELSTOWN is the setting this weekend for the next programme of events in the Old Butter Roads Food Trail series.
The Old Butter Roads Trail initiative has been developed by a network of artisan producers, food outlets and visitor attractions to celebrate the range of foods produced in the Muskerry, Duhallow and Avondhu areas. It was officially launched earlier this year by Michael Creed, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
Free events on this Saturday, 24 June start at 10am with a guided tour of Mitchelstown Allotment. In the afternoon Mitchelstown Library will host a butter making workshop, a food heritage exhibition and farmer Maurice Walsh will be there at 2.30pm to provide an insight into a day in the life of a dairy farmer complete with cow milking demonstration.
The highlight of the weekend is the food and wine tasting experience on Sunday 25 June. Guests meet at Ballinwillin House at 1.30pm, home to the awarding winning Ballinwillin wild boar and venison, who has partnered with Joanne Sheehan from the Thatch and Thyme Cafe in Kildorrery to serve a range of venison and wild boar delights paired with wines from Chateau Mulcahy, Longueville House cider and beers from JJ’s Craft Brewing Company.
Guests will then embark on a guided historical walk of Mitchelstown with stops at various points including the Market Place Restaurant, O’Callaghan’s Deli & Cafe and Blueberries Café. Praline Pastry Shop & Café, the latest addition to the culinary scene in Mitchelstown, will supply pastries and desserts to all venues.
The multiple food and wine tastings will be accompanied by music and busking and is all included in the €40 ticket available in Mitchelstown in The Style Lounge, The Pizza House and the Favourite & Scullery.
The weekend events have been devised in collaboration with Mitchelstown Heritage Society and Mitchelstown Business Association. Visit the Old Butter Roads Food Trail facebook page for full programme details.
