Kildorrery hurlers hold out for close win over Finbarrs

Kildorrery 2-13 St. Finbarr’s 0-17

KILDORRERY edged out St Finbarr’s in the County IHC at Rathcormac on Monday. It was keenly contested with very little separating two evenly matched sides.

The winners had an early point by Jerry McCarthy with Finbarr Stapleton having a goal in the 3rd minute. St. Finbarr’s hit back strong with some well taken pointed frees by Ian Lordan.

Peter O’Brien pointed a free with Eoghan Hill replying as Kildorrery led 1-5 to 0 -6 after 20 minutes. Ian Butler made some very good saves as the Barr’s attacked from close range.

Both sides continued to exchange points with Kildorrery holding a close interval lead 1-7 to 0-8.

On the resumption Barr’s forced level early on with points by Bill O’Connell and Robert O’Mahony. O’Mahony and Michael Ryan were very effective in attack and the Seandun side moved 0-12 to 1-7 clear.

Peter O’Brien pointed a ‘65 and levelled from a free. Ian Lordan edged the City side ahead once more with Enda Dennehy giving them a two point lead 0-14 to 1-9.

Kildorrery made a number of substituti­ons. Michael Walsh did well and points by Peter O’Brien and Finbarr Stapleton had the sides level for the 3rd and last time. Stephen Coughlan who was only on seconds gained possession from a Peter O’Brien free and he goaled with six minutes to go. Coughlan was also provider for O’Brien to strike a fine point 2-12 to 0-15.

Barr’s hit back with a pointed free by Ian Lordan. They added another to come within a point as normal time finished. In injury time Peter O’Brien added another free. In the 66th minute Barr’s came so close to a winning goal when Enda Dennehy put Ian Lordan through. Kildorrery keeper Ian Butler made a massive save that was followed by the final whistle.
