Glanworth upset the odds with Mallow victory

GLANWORTH had a surprise win over Mallow at Castletown­roche.

From the start the winners did well. Tommy Fitzgibbon opened with an early point. William Jackson was called on to make a very good save from Kieran O’Sullivan in the third minute with a ‘45 being conceded.

Craig Lynch pointed the ‘45 and Conor Stokes gave Mallow the lead 0-2 to 0-1. In the 1lth minute Michael Cashman levelled and a minute later Tommy Fitzgibbon edged Glanworth ahead.

Sean Finn was outstandin­g at midfield and further pressure yielded points by Padraigh Hannon, Michael Cashman, Eric Hanrahan and Sean Finn. Mallow had a goal by Jamie O’Connor in the 24th minute.

William Jackson made another reflex save in the 27th minute. Padraigh Hannon had a Glanworth goal as they led 1-8 to 1-2. In injury time Craig Lynch pointed a ‘45 1-8 to 1-3 at the break.

Mallow introduced Alan Hogan for the second half and he played very well. Hogan had an early point and Craig Lynch pointed his third ‘45 as the lead was down to three points 1-8 to 1-5.

Glanworth responded well. First Michael Cashman pointed and Jack Coughlan picked up from a poor kick out and kicked over. Mallow had a punched point by Alan Hogan.

Tommy Fitzgibbon restored Glanworth’s five point lead entering the final quarter. All the excitement was in this final quarter. Sean Finn had a very good point for Glanworth with Michael O’Rourke replying for Mallow.

Further Mallow pressure yielded a point by Hogan with Aaron Sheehan having a goal and a point that had the sides level by the 55th minute 1-12 to 2- 9. In the closing moments John Landers soloed through and goaled for Glanworth.

Jack Coughlan and Michael O’Rourke exchanged a point 2-13 to 2- 10 after 58 minutes.

A minute later Mark Kenny goaled and the sides were level for the fourth time. In injury time good play by Sean Finn to Denis Healy led to a match winning point by Jack Coughlan.
