LOTTO

The jackpot of €1,000 was won last Tuesday night by our GAA adult secretary, Dan O’Sullivan. With the lotto having been won, by fellow Carraig Road resident Pat O’Regan, only last week, it would encourage others on the road to buy, as these things often goes in threes. The winning ticket was sold by John Magner. The numbers drawn were 11, 23 and 34. The draw was held in Griffins Bar.

The lucky-dip winners were: €50 – Paddy Hartnett (Seller – Haven Bar); €30 – Donal and Mary Deady (Seller – Griffins Bar); €20 – Claire Brenna (Seller – John Brennan). The next draw will take place on June 20 in the Haven Bar. Tickets are on sale in all local outlets.

GAA ACTION

COUNTY JUNIOR B HURLING SEMI FINAL – In Páirc Uí Rinn, Killavullen worked their way back to the final of the Junior B Hurling Championship final, a final we so painstakingly lost last year, by defeated Rathpeacon on a final score of 0-22 to 0-10.

Seán O’Regan opened our scoring after coming in well from his wing in the second minute of the game, before Liam Cronin landed a long range point in the third minute. To complete our good start, Pa Egan scored a point that rifled just over the bar in the fourth minute. Rathpeacon scored in the sixth minute after a wayward clearance from us found a free man, but it was one of theirs. Liam stretched out our lead again with a point in the ninth minute but Rathpeacon answered that with vengeance with two points of their own. The score was 0-04 to 0-03 after 10 minutes. Liam scored again, but the game was equalised when Rathpeacon scored two frees by the 16th minute.

This was emerging as the pattern of the game at this stage, we were pressing, and looked dangerous, but our final pass was wayward and Rathpeacon seemed to have a free man in and around midfield and were able to draw a free or secure a score from there.

Barry Murphy thundered into the game then and scored a point in the 19th minute before he scored a free after good work by Ian O’Gorman, who capitalised on a short free that went askew from Rathpeacon. Barry scored another point in the 24th minute. Charlie Lillis then delighted the entire under-16 team when he scored a lovely point in the 29th minute after one of his trademark quick turns. (Charlie trains the under-16s).

Rathpeacon got a point back but we concluded the first period with two long range pointed frees from Liam Cronin, after his midfield partner Séamus Fox and Patrick Angland forced a turnover, Liam converted that long range effort and repeated the dose a minute later for another indiscretion to leave the half time tally at 0-11 to 0-06.

On the resumption, Rathpeacon were to the fore for the opening eight minutes and scored two points to eat into our lead. We weathered the storm though, thanks in no small way, to the introduction of Eoghan Buckley to midfield. Seán O’Regan scored a point before Barry Murphy scored a free in the 42nd minute. Liam scored a 65 Metre free in the same minute and then Barry got another free after good work by Charlie Lillis. Billy Norris and Kevin Fox were good in this period, but Pa Sheehan was like a man possessed. He just would not be beaten. Rathpeacon tried to borne down on goal but our full back line and goalie were steadfast. Rathpeacon did get a point from a free in the 49th minute, the same minute that we lost a player to a red card after he was initially fouled, but sought retribution afterwards. Bad decision.

That seemed to be a catalyst for several Killavullen players to work extra hard for each other, and with Rathpeacon pressing for goals, and we holding tight at the back, it made for some space up front, that we capitalised on. Barry Murphy scored another point after a fine delivery from Patrick Angland, and Rathpeacon cancelled out that score with a point of their own. Five minutes to go, and Killavullen were leading 0-17 to 0-10.

We finished with an explosion as scores though, started by Séamus Fox and then, a fine point by Seán O’Regan to cap his excellent game. Barry Murphy scored a sublime point from right over on the far touch line; the introduced Barthly Hayes caught a long delivery from Liam Cronin, after excellent defensive play by Billy Norris and Kevin Fox, and offloaded quickly to the inrushing Séamus Fox, who drilled the ball over the bar.

Alex Notter then demonstrated that Barry Murphy is not alone on that Monanimy road with scores from the touchline, as he fired one over, with the crowd in the stand behind him cheering. Nice ending to a game that we were the better team in, but did some not so clever things on the night, and not every player was at their best. Loads to work on for the final.

The team and those who scored were: Michael Cronin; Stephen Rice; Pa Sheehan; Paddy Nagle; Billy Norris; Kevin Fox; Patrick Angland; Séamus Fox (0-02); Liam Cronin (0-06, 0-03F + 0-01 (65); Tom O’Regan; Ian O’Gorman; Seán O’Regan (0-03); Pa Egan (0-01); Barry Murphy (008, 0-03F); Charlie Lillis (0-01). Substitutes: Eoghan Buckley for Tom O’Regan; Barthly Hayes for Charlie Lillis; Gearoid Sheehan for Stephen Rice; Alex Notter (001) for Seán O’Regan

The other semi-final, played before our game, ended in a welter of excitement as Lough Rovers forced an equalising pointed free against Whites Cross to bring parity to the game.

The date of the replay is not known at this stage, compromised by Lough Rovers playing St John’s in the County Junior C Football final, next Friday night.

KILLAVULLEN V KILWORTH – In sweltering heat in Killavullen, Killavullen and Kilworth played out an entertaining game in the last but one game of the Avondhu Divisional one league games for 2017 for both teams. The winners would be assured of a semi-final berth in the league and unfortunately, for the blues, the winners were to be Kilworth on a final score of 1-09 to 2-11.

Killavullen started well, and had points from Charlie Lillis twice and then Seán O’Regan before Kilworth opened their account for the day. Then Kilworth struck for the opening goal of the game, a goal Killavullen would feel, that they should have defeated better. Charlie kicked a fine free after Jack O’Regan and Declan Cronin had interlinked well, before Jack got fouled. Kilworth replied with a free of their own. They got another point from a free, before their centre forward ran through the heart of our porous defence and drew a penalty. It was duly converted and our response was another point from a free for Charlie, to leave the half time score 2-03 to 0-05.

On the resumption, we pressed gallantly but had a propensity to concede soft frees to the opposition, we did that twice before the score of the game came from Lucas Sheehan. He picked up a ball on his half back line, and drove at pace through the heart of the Kilworth defence, they backed off expected an off lay but Lucas rifled the back of the net with a thunderous shot.

1-05 to 2-05 now but crucially Kilworth got the next score, and the one after that. Charlie replied with two more points from play, after good work for the initial score by Seán O’Regan, who battled gallantly in midfield all day. Kilworth tacked on two more points before Charlie replied again, and then Kilworth got another point, and their final point was from a free to bring their tally to 2-11. That was better than the 1-09 that we amassed, our final score coming from Seán O’Regan.

Deprived of some players due to niggling injuries picked up in the hurling semi-final on Friday night, the timing of this game was cruel, but the congested schedule meant that it had to be played.

Killavullen will go in search of that elusive fourth win, which could give them a semi-final berth in the league, against Fermoy on Wednesday next, the 21st.

The team and those who scored were: Michael Cronin; Stephen Rice; Pa Sheehan; James Angland; Gearoid Sheehan; Billy Norris; Lucas Sheehan (1-00); Seán O’Regan (0-02); Séamus Fox; Declan Cronin; Charlie Lillis (0-07, 0-03F); David Howell; Jack O’Regan; Pa Cronin; David Brosnan. Substitutes: 16. Eoin Buckley for Pa Sheehan.
