LISCARROLL ATHLETIC CLUB
Athletics in top form at Munsters: Last weekend at CIT was a scorcher. It was suitable for those with an interest in sunbathing or swimming, but not suited to runners, as it was also very humid on the track.
As a club we were represented by six athletes, who were in top form in their events, all girls.
As results go, this has to be the best, with 20 events between them, all six will be able to compete in the All Ireland Championship in their chosen events.
Ciara Sheehy U16, won 4 golds, dominating each of her events. In the shot put, she broke the existing Munster record by over 2 metres.
In the hammer, she threw 46.22 metres at her ease and to complete a very positive weekend went on to win the Javelin and discus gold medals at 30.52 and 30.29 respectively.
Vickie Cusack, U18, had a different mix of events on Saturday. She had a great start to the weekend winning the shot put with a new personal best of 11.50, followed by the long jump 5.19 metres.
On Sunday, she added the 400m hurdles gold along with a javelin bronze to her collection with a throw of 30.85 metres.
Amy Whelan, U15, concentrated on all throws winning gold in the shot put 10.87 metres and gold in the javelin with a power throw of 38.63 metres. She was really impressive in the javelin and left no one in any doubt of her intentions in the All Ireland. She completed the weekend with her first Munster discus medal with a bronze.
Hollie McCarthy, U15, competed in all track events and finished up with 2 third places and 1 fourth, all qualifying for All Irelands. Her evnts were 200m sprint (3rd) in a time of 26.73, 80m hurdles (3rd) in 13.4s and 100m sprint (4th) in 12.99 seconds. She will improve on those times for Tullamore.
Aoife O’Sullivan, U15, had a great win in her high jump at 1.63m, having come very close to the 1.66m in her final attempt.
Niamh Linehan, U18, did herself proud winning her first ever Munster medal in the long jump at 4.78m. She did this in an event which she only started this year and with no jump training. She will also be able to compete in the 100m and 200m in the All Ireland’s.
This was an unbelievable Munsters for all with 10 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze. Well done to all concerned for such a good weekend. Never in the clubs history were so many medals and qualifying places achieved by so few athletes.
Johnny Murphy, U12, will also join the above in 600m and high Jump in the All Irelands. Our condolences must go out to Joe Ivory U15 who was unable to compete due to an arm injury received in a schools championships some weeks ago. He will also miss out on the All Ireland’s.
The sympathy of the officers and members of the club is extended to the family relatives and friends of the late Bridie Keane, Liscarroll, who died last week. To her husband Joe and family we extend sincere sympathy, may she rest in peace.
