MACROOM GAA JUVENILE UPDATES

HUGO Casey, captain of the 1962 senior county-winning side, was laid to rest last week.

From Chapel Cross, Hugo was an excellent under-age player and played School Shield, juvenile, minor, senior and junior for Macroom as well as captaining De La Salle’s senior team.

He played for Cork minors in 1957 and Cork seniors in 1959 and 1960. In 1958 he won a county senior medal, and captained a star-studded Macroom team in 1962 to win the club’s 10th and last senior county title at 22.

In spite of poor results in the ensuing years, Hugo continued to play until 1970. He was an accomplished, passionate and loyal servant to Macroom GAA club. He was also a gifted singer and performed in many pantomimes and concerts.

Tje club gives its sincerest sympathy to Antoinette, his wife, his daughters, and to his sister, Regina. He was predeceased by his brother, Niall, a former player, county board delegate and Cork minor football selector.

MATCH REPORTS:

U-16s: The U-16s recommenced with a fine win over previously unbeaten Éire Óg in the P2 league, and the final score was 2-10 to 1-6.

Both sides were missing some regulars. Macroom dominated play against a physically stronger Éire Óg team and led 0-4 to 0-2 at half-time, and should have had a much bigger lead but for wayward shooting.

In the second half, Macroom continued to dominate but inaccuracy in front of goal continued to keep the result in doubt.

However, a goal from Bradley O’Shea mid-way through the half put daylight between the sides, and from then on Macroom added a further 1-3 to the scoreboard with the second goal coming from Dylan Faller.

Macroom were comfortable winners in the end, with Éire Óg’s goal coming with the last kick of the game.

U-14s: The U14s travelled to Templenoe on Saturday with 18 players and short some regulars.

Playing with the wind, they dominated the first half and led 2-8 to 2-2, the goals coming from Brian Healy and Jack Sexton.

Macroom continued to play well and worked some lovely scores, while preventing the opposition any goals and a foothold in the match. Seán De Lacey got two second half goals, with Mark Hunt and Brian Healy getting the others. In their best performance since the Aghabullogue match, many played well and Darragh Neville was excellent in goal.

Panel: Darragh Neville, Frank Lazlo, Ben O’Herlihy, Ben O’Connell, Ronan Morey, Dean Granville, Brian Healy (2-0), Gerry Kelleher, Jack Sexton(1-1), Mark Hunt(1-1), Robert Lucey (0-1), Darren Sweeney, Rian Coghlan, Kieran Doody(0-5), Martin Sosa, Luke Aherne(0-3), Marcin Oleski and Seán De Lacey(2-2).
