Public invited to take free historical tour amid the splendour of Doneraile Park

- BILL BROWNE

VISITORS to Doneraile Wildlife Park last Sunday got an insight into one of the reasons why the venue has become Ireland’s fourth most popular free visitor attraction.

More than 100 people took part in the free monthly historical tour of the Park’s world-famous gardens – taking the chance to take a selfie with some famous characters from the Park’s fascinating history in the process.

The tour will take place again on Sunday, July 23 as part of a day of free events at the Park, which will also include a falconry demonstration and an outdoor performance by the acclaimed Cork Light Orchestra at the aptly named ‘Pleasure Ground’ adjacent to the main Doneraile Court building.

The secretary of the Doneraile Development Partnership (DDA), Michael O’Sullivan, said the free monthly tour was proving to be a big hit with visitors.

“We have six trained tour guides who are experts on the history of the magnificent gardens and the St Leger family’s long association with Doneraile. Members of the Doneraile Dramatic Society will also be dressed in period costume depicting some of the historical characters associated with the history of the Park,” said Mr O’Sullivan.

These will include King Henry VIII, who appointed Anthony St Leger to the position of Lord Deputy of Ireland and Elizabeth Aldworth (née St Leger), the first and only woman ever to become a Freemason.

Another famous character who also appears on the tour is Queen Elizabeth I, the subject of Edmund Spenser’s epic poem ‘ The Faire Queene’, which was written in the 16th century while the poet was living at Kilcolman Castle and inspired by the gardens at Doneraile Park.

As well as learning about the fascinating history of the Park and its gardens, visitors will also get the chance to record their own bit of history by taking a selfie with some of these historical characters.

“Sunday, July 23 promises to be a wonderful day out in the Park and we would urge people to come along and enjoy the fun,” said Michael.

In addition, the Park also hosts private tours costing just €5 per head, which must be prebooked. For more information about the July 23 events and others taking place at the Park during the summer visit the dedicated Doneraile Online Facebook page.
