Six primary schools hurling titles decided
IN the Roinn A1 15-a-side final Newtownshandrum NS retained the title they won last year when they overcame their great rivals Charleville CBS. From the start the better balanced Newtown side prevailed. They defended very well and took some vital scores that had them ahead all through.
Kieran Murphy opened the scoring with Robert Troy having a goal in the 4th minute. Colin Quaid with a point made it 1-2 to 0-0. Robert Troy added another point with Charleville having their opening score when John Ross O’Reilly kicked a point from close range. Colin Quaid and Rory Troy free had the winners 1-5 to 0-1 clear at the interval.
Daire Ryan with a goal on the changeover opened up a 10 point lead 2-5 to 0-1.
David Forde pointed two Charleville frees. Forde had a goal from a free that cut the lead 2-5 to 1-3. Newtown dominated the last quarter. Rory Troy goaled from a free and also followed with a pointed free. Newtown made a number of substitutions as the final moments were played out. They had their 4th goal by Kieran Murphy from a free. Scoil Mhairtin Kilworth NS 2-1 Bishop Murphy Fermoy NS 0-5
THE Roinn A2 12-a-side final for the Avondhu cup was between neighbours Scoil Mhairtin Kilworth and Bishop Murphy Memorial NS Fermoy. Bishop Murphy had the aid of the stiff breeze in the first half.
Both defences were very solid withscores being hard to secure. Brendan Daly was in great form for Fermoy having his sides total of five points. Daly opened with an early point and followed with a pointed ‘65’ after seven minutes. Bishop Murphy created a few other scoring chances but a series of fine saves by Patrick Kenny denied them a couple of certain goals. Brendan Daly pointed a second ‘65’ that edged his side 0-3 clear. Kilworth were off target three times with Daly having his 4th point just before the break that gave his side an interval lead 0-4 to 0-0.
On the restart Kilworth came strong, they introduced Thomas Maher who played well. Shane Coughlan had their opening score a pointed ‘ 65 after 6 minutes. Kilworth gained control at midfield where Shane Coughlan was very influential with Liam Og Hegarty also dangerous up front. Brendan Daly had a Bishop Murphy pointed free in the 9th minute which was their only score of this half.
In the 11th minute Kilworth had a goal when good play by Shane Coughlan Oisin Farrell-Carey, and Daniel Horan led to a well executed goal by Liam Og Hegarty. Shane Coughlan and Conor Hynes won vital possession breaking the Fermoy stranglehold. Coughlan struck a well taken goal with four minutes to go 2-1 to 0-5. Both sides tried very hard in the closing moments. Kilworth defence held firm and they emerged winners in one of the lowest scoring games in this competition in many years. Churchtown NS 8-16 Glenahulla NS 1-4
THE meeting of Churchtown NS and Glenahulla NS. The game was a one-sided with the sharper and more determined Churchtown side running out very easy winners and in so doing captured the Primary Schools hurling title they last won in 1997. Glenahulla opened with an early point by Dylan Walsh.
Gradually Churchtown got on top and Sean Delee levelled and also gave his side the lead from a free. Evan McCarthy had the sides deadlocked 0-2 each after seven minutes. Michael Delee found the net and Josh Quinn followed with a point. Churchtown had some good scores by Sean Delee including a kicked goal that opened up a lead 2-6 to 0-3.
Josh Quinn pointed after a solo run and also from a free. Michael Delee had his second goal with Jack Raftery having the first of his three goals just before half time as Churchtown led at the break 5-10 to 0-3.
There was no way back for Glenahulla on the restart. They were against the stiff breeze. Eoin Hartnett had a Glenahulla point but a series of Churchtown points had them 5-15 to 0-4 clear with seven minutes remaining. Jack Raftery had a goal with Sean Delee making it 7-15 to 0-4. Glenahulla battled to the end against the odds. They had a goal by Evan McCarthy before Churchtown had their eighth goal by Sean Carroll. Killavullen NS 5-8 Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire Buttevant 3-2
BUTTEVANT had the aid of the stiff breeze in the first half of this Roinn B 1 12-a-side final. Killavullen took control from the offset with two early goals by Charlie Cremin. Buttevant had a goal by Neal O’Connell in the seventh minute . The winners had their third goal soon after when Jamie Magnier billowed the net. Magnier followed with two pointed frees that helped his side to an interval lead 3-2 to 1-0.
Buttevant moved their keeper Tyrone Madigan outfield with Aidan O’Callaghan taking over in goal. The winners dominated throughout the field and points by Owen and Jamie Magnier had them 3-4 to 1-0 clear. Good play by Jamie Magnier led to a third goal by Charlie Cremin. Killavullen’s fifth goal came from Jamie Magnier with six minutes to go.
Buttevant had two goals by Neal O’Connell but there was no denying Killavullen their deserved win. Killavullen ‘man of the match’ Jamie Magnier had an outstanding game with Cork Primary Schools in Thurles on Sunday. BALLYHOOLY NS had nine points to spare over Ballygiblin N.S. in the Roinn B 2 9-a-side final. Ballygiblin had the aid of the breeze in the first half. Kyle Ettoh opened the scoring. Brian Lombard pointed a ‘65’ and they moved 0-3 clear when Oisin Aherne worked well for Kyle Ettoh who scored his second point.
Ballygiblin created a good attack when Conor Walsh worked well for Jack McGrath who had his effort at goal well saved by Eoin Sykes. Adam Barry opened Ballygiblin’s account in the 10th minute from a ‘65’. The same player soloed through on goal by was denied by Mark Burdett. Barry with a point after another solo run cut the lead to a point 0-3 to 0-2. Brian Lombard pointed a second ‘65.
Ballygiblin finished the half strong. Jack McGrath had a very good point. In the 16th minute Kyle Ettoh had his third point 0-5 to 0-3. Good play by Mark Burdett and Oisin Aherne led to a goal by Brian Lombard. In injury time Adam Barry pointed a free that cut the lead at the break 1-5 to 0-4.
Adam Barry pointed for Ballygiblin on the resumption. Kyle Ettoh soloed through for a great point. Brian Lombard added a point that put the winners double scores clear 1-7 to 0-5. Jack McGrath with a point kept Ballygiblin in touch. Brian Lombard restored the five-point lead with a free.
Ballyhooly keeper Eoin Sykes saved well again as Brina Murray put Jack McGrath through. Ballyhooly sealed their win with a late goal by Cian O’Riordan. THE Roinn B 3 9-a-side final between Baltydaniel NS and Annaleentha NS was a one-sided final with the winners in control from the start. Bill Kingston had two early goals for the winners while Niall Burke had a penalty for Annaleentha saved by Rory O’Donovan. Good play by Bill Kingston led to a goal by Fionn Roche.
Annaleentha had points by Sean O’Sullivan, Niall Burke and Cathal O’Riordan. Claire Smith added a goal that helped Baltydaniel lead at the break 4-2 to 0-3.
The second half was very much dominated by Baltydaniel, Bill Kingston and Sean O’Sullivan swopped an early goal. For the rest of the game it was all Baltydaniel who added a further 5-6 without reply. The five goals by David Duane, Fionn Roche, Bill Kingston, Eimear Duignan and Kevin Kilmartin.
