Feis Laitiarain draws entries fromfar and wide
THE music and craic proved mighty for the annual Feis Laitiarain, the Cullen staging lived up to its reputation as one of the best in the Region. Organisers pulled out all the stops to promote the traditional heritage of the buoyant Sliabh Luachra as the 119th staging of Feis Laitiarain on the grounds of Cullen GAA Pitch acted as a shop window for native culture.
The weather man obliged, a balmy afternoon added to the occasion, attracting large crowds outdoors to enjoy an action packed programme of events.
“The staging proved a terrific success with all categories indicating an increase of entries from recent years”, said spokesperson Noreen Meade.
From the first Feis hosted in 1898 in the Old School at Lislehane; the music, dance and song has continued in an annual hosting that’s made a remarkable contribution to the heritage of region.
“Feis Laitiarain is very much a community event, local organisations and the public lend their outstanding support to the venture to ensure its success. We are indebted to so many people for their help in so many ways towards enhancing the staging”, said Noreen.
And there was a significant increase to the singing, language and music competitions with entries across the South West Region and organisers commended the support of Duhallow based schools. Adding to the itinenary was set dancing classes that generated interest.
The schedule allowed county Fleadh Cheoil winners from Cork and Kerry with the ideal platform to freshen their talent ahead of the Munster final in Douglas next month.
Children sports added to the diversity of the proceedings and the programme closed with a Seisiun that epitomised the cultural strength of the region. And Cullen National School took the opportunity to launch a new CD encapsulating music and song.
“All credit to all involved on bringing the talents of the school children to fruition in a wonderful selection of music and song”, said School Principal Hannah Kelleher.
