GAA ACTION

ROUND 8 – AVONDHU DIVISION one FOOTBALL LEAGUE: In a game that would decide which of the two teams would advance to the semi-finals of the Division 1 football league, Killavullen had a comprehensive win over Fermoy, on a final score of 4-19 to 1-09., on Wednesday night last in Killavullen.

On a balmy night, down by the Blackwater, was their ever a more perfect place to be, and Liam Cronin certainly light up the night with some savoury scores. Liam scored the first four points of the game, two with his left foot as Killavullen really took the game to Fermoy. Fermoy got a point back, before Paul O’Sullivan was next on the score sheet, and Paul had reason to be ecstatic, as he had just finished his leaving certificate earlier in the day.

A lot of pent up energy was being exhausted by our half forward line that was tracking back, and breaking forward at speed, that had Fermoy bewildered at times. Fermoy scored another point, before Barthly Hayes, operating at the edge of the square was fed a decent ball by Dave Brosnan, Mr Hayes’s shot was saved, but Colm O’Connell was lurking with intent and hit the rebound to the net. Fermoy got a point back, before Pa Sheehan and our alert goalkeeper Michael Cronin thwarted a Fermoy attempt on goal, and fed Dave Roche out of his wing. After exchanging passes with a number of players, notably Séamus Fox and Patrick Angland, Dave was at hand to kick the ball over the bar, for a real tonic of a team score.

Liam got another point in his impressive first half display, while Fermoy got another point back, after our goalie, brilliantly got his hand to a ball that was goal ward, and pushed it onto the cross bar and over for a point. Barthly Hayes then scored a goal of his own, after Lucas Sheehan was instrumental in the build-up.

Fermoy got two points in quick succession, but Liam Cronin finished the half with three points, two from play, and another from a free, deputising for our regular free taker, Charlie Lillis, who is on holidays. The score at the interval was Killavullen 2-10 to 0-05 for Fermoy.

Fermoy got the opening point of the second period, but then this was cancelled out by a point from Eoghan Buckley. Fermoy tacked on two more points, to hint at a revival but Colm O’Connell stopped that momentum with a good team goal, after an exchange of passes with his other forwards. The next score was more of an individual effort after Paul O’Sullivan came down the middle of the field, Fermoy backed off to pick up other runners, and Paul thumped the ball into the net.

Fermoy scored again before Paul added to his tally. Killavullen used the opportunity to initiate a raft of changes and to rest other players with a glut of fixture pending. James Angland in goals made an instinctive brilliant save, but Fermoy forced the ball over the line for a goal. Liam Cronin scored a free, Seán O’Regan got a point after good strong running, and Séamus Fox scored a nice point. Fermoy got a point back to bring their tally for the evening to 1-09 but then, Dave Brosnan thundered into the game, and demanded the ball, and scored the last four points of the game to bring our tally to 4-19.

The win, and regular league campaign was very good for Killavullen, with a relatively young team. We played eight games, won four, drew one, and lost three. That is enough to get us into a league semi-final against Kilworth, at a date to be fixed in the future.

The management team of Kevin, Finny, Willie and Mick deserve enormous credit for gelling a team together whose ethos is on hard work, and mixed with flair and ingenuity.

The team and those who scored were: Michael Cronin, Stephen Rice, Pa Sheehan, Dave Roche (0-01), Séamus Fox (001), Billy Norris, Patrick Angland, Eoghan Buckley (0-01), Seán O’Regan ((0-01), Liam Cronin (0-09, 0-02F), Colm O’Connell (2-00), Paul O’Sullivan (1-02), Lucas Sheehan, Barthly Hayes (1-00), David Brosnan (0-04,). Substitutes: James Magner for Colm O’Connell; James Angland for Michael Cronin; David Howell for Lucas Sheehan; Pa Cronin for Liam Cronin; Jack O’Regan for Eoghan Buckley.

ROUND 4 – COUNTY JUNIOR B HURLING LEAGUE: On Saturday night Killavullen played host to a fine Cloughduv team in the latest instalment of the County Junior B hurling league and faced their sternest hurling test of the year thus far. Killavullen won out in a final score of 2-17 to 2-13.

We started sluggishly with a number of positional changes as the management team sought to see more players in action with the idea of cementing the starting 15 of the Forthcoming County Junior B Hurling championship final, now earmarked for July 14.

Barry Murphy got a point from play before Cloughduv’s very impressive midfielder scored a fine point. The same player scored another beauty after three minutes and then to show that he had more strings in his bow, converted a free in the fifth Minute. Seán O’Regan was showing best in our rejigged half forward line, and got a point from play in the sixth minute. The Number eight from Cloughduv scored again in the eighth minute,, and we answered back with a point from a free from Barry Murphy in the 10th minute, after a fine quick clearance from Jack O’Connor caused the problem for their rear guard.

We were being served up a stern test but that was exactly what we needed. Geároid Sheehan and Billy Norris coped well with a dangerous moment. However, the warning signs were not heeded and Cloughduv scored a goal in the 17th minute, a goal that we feel, we should have coped better with. Barry Murphy answered that score back with a point from play, before we lost our full back to injury after he fell from a height on the rock hard ground. Cloughduv got another point from play before we started to come much more into the game, with some astute positional switches, notably Billy Norris to full back, Eoghan Buckley to centre back, James Fitzpatrick to wing back and Barthly Hayes on the 40, where his ability to win ball in the air was influential.

Barry and Seán O’Regan got two quick points in a row before we were awarded a penalty. Barry elected to drive the ball low and hard to the right of the goalkeeper but he made a brilliant save to turn it around for a 65 metre free. Barry converted that shot to gain something from the situation, and Pa Egan got another point to bring our half time tally to 0-08. Cloughduv got the last two points of the half to bring their tally to 1-07.

On the changeover, Cloughduv were first to score but we got that score back from Pa Egan. They scored again, and Barry cancelled out that score. A long delivery from Eoghan Buckley caused consternation in their goal line, when their goalie did very well to parry it out from under his cross bar but Pa Cronin was at hand to double immediately on the ball, and send it over the line for our opening goal. Cloughduv got a point back, but Alex Notter drove a huge ball from distance over the bar to keep up our momentum.

Séamus Fox was not operating at midfield and his intelligent distribution was seized on by our forwards. Cloughduv had good fortune when the referee did not award a second penalty to us, after Dave Brosnan was upended inside the square but the now introduced Liam Cronin did goal for us, to give us the lead. Cloughduv got a goal back almost immediately when their corner forward showed good persistence and determination to chase down a ball and worked himself in along the end line, and finished sharply to the opposing corner.

Barry Murphy got two points back quickly for us, to give us forward momentum again. The youthful half back line now, of James Fitzpatrick, Eoghan Buckley in the anchor position and Jack O’Connor on the other flank were instrumental in us pressing forward and their deliveries enabled Barry Murphy and Liam Cronin to score the last three points.

Others to show up well on the night were the ever reliable Billy Norris and Geároid Sheehan, Paul O’Sullivan and Pa Egan but the selectors would have been well please with the overall attitude of the team.

Cloughduv were a lovely team, a fine mix of youth and experience and there was not a foul stroke between the two teams all night which made for a fine spectacle for the nice crowd on the bank and an easy assignment for the referee. The final score was 2-17 to 2-13

The team and those who scored were: Michael Cronin, Stephen Rice, Paddy Nagle, Gearoid Sheehan, Jack O’Connor, Billy Norris, Eoghan Buckley, Paul O’Sullivan, Pa Egan, James Fitzpatrick, Seán O’Regan (0-03), Alex Notter (0-01), Barry Murphy (0-10), Pa Cronin (1-00), David Brosnan. Substitutes: Barthly Hayes for Paddy Nagle, Séamus Fox for Stephen Rice, Liam Cronin (1-01) for Pa Cronin.

GLENVILLE MID-SUMMER FESTIVAL – FOOTBALL TOURAMENT: On Sunday, June 25, Killavullen were invited to play Glenville in an under-14 Football tournament and ditto, for the under-16 team. Both games were ultra-competitive with superb refereeing by John Kirby from Midleton.

The Killavullen under-14 team were defeated by a single point, for which Ronan Barry, Dan Ryan and Séamus O’Mahony were excellent, but praise must be heaped upon the Glenville goalkeeper, as he pulled off a wondrous save to keep his team in the lead, towards the end of the game.

In the under-16 game, the winning margin for Glenville was four points but again, this game was very even. Glenville claimed victory with a strong burst in the first half that yielded 2-04 to them, without a reply. Killavullen came much more into the game in the second period and clawed their way back with goals from Mark Nagle and Mikey O’Connor but we could not get the third goal.

Glenville club are to be commended for their excellent hospitality, and to the very fine burgers and tea served up to all the teams. The Glenville contact, Richie Cahill was especially courteous.
