Famed Scully Fest will feature artists from the Duhallow area

SIX LOCAL ARTISTS WILL SHOWCASE THEIR WORK IN A ‘FRINGE’ EXHIBITION AT THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL

- MARIA HERLIHY

AS part of the famed Scully Fest in Newmarket, there will be an exhibition by six local artists which will feature everything from photography to intricate paintings.

The art exhibition aptly called ‘Àit: Place’ will run as a fringe event of Scully Fest. Last year, it featured four artists in the old library on Church Street and it went down a treat with visitors. This year, Newmarket Motors have very kindly allowed the organisers to use their second show room, which has enabled them to put together a much bigger show to feature six local artists.

Scully Fest will be held from Thursday, August 10 until Monday, August 14. The official launch of Ait will take place on Thursday, August 10 at 7.30pm and afterwards everyone can go to Scanlon’s Bar for the first session of the festival, followed by a free concert there by the Ceilli All stars. All of the artists work will be on show throughout the festival in the showroom from 1pm until 5pm.

Returning for a second year will be Siobhan Burke, a fine art painter, who graduated from Crawford College of Art and Design in 2001. She also had a one woman show in Kanturk library in March which was part of the Kanturk Arts Festival. She describes her artwork as being inspired by the “innately beautiful yet bleak winter landscape” where she lives.

Claire O’Keeffe is an artist based in Newmarket, who graduated from CIT Crawford College of Art and Design two years ago. She works predominately in the medium of collage. Since childhood, she has collected imagery, old biscuit tins full of images cut from old catalogues and magazines. Hours have been spent cutting and arranging imagery in unexpected juxtapositions, creating a different narrative each time.

Ann Duane, is an illustrator and designer living in Kilbrin, having recently moved home from Melbourne where she spent the last decade. She said she has a great appreciation for the natural world, drawing inspiration from the Irish and Australian landscapes and patterns found in nature. Her work is mainly monochrome with a splash of colour using ink and watercolour.

Taur photographer Eileen O’Connor will also feature her work. While she works as a wedding and portrait photographer, she also likes to capture landscapes and animals in her spare time. “Living in a rural area, I spend hours rambling with my camera. I particularly love the curiosity of cows,” said Eileen with a smile.

Newmarket native, Brid Moynihan, who is a member at Cork Printmakers and is a graduate of the Crawford College of Fine Art in 2007. “My work is mostly done on copper plates. I also use a technique called Aquatint, which gives the images their grey tones. My work is semi-autobiographical and I get inspiration from fairy tales. Combining fairy tales and my own experiences, I hope to create a new narrative for the viewer,” she said.

Boherbue native, Joseph Heffernan, will also feature his work. He is a graduate of Crawford College of Art and Design and NCAD Dublin. He is a founder member of Sample Studios Cork and has exhibited widely in Ireland
