Munster title for Araglen Desmonds Buí ladies

-

ARAGLEN Desmonds Bui won the Munster Ladies Gaelic Football 7 a side Intermediate Final at Mallow GAA grounds defeating Mungret St Pauls (Limerick) by 5-7 to 4-4 in a cracking final recently. Araglen Desmonds Buí who have girls from Ballydesmond, Boherbue and Kiskeam got off to a great start with two points from Kate Dennehy.

In this 7-a-side Munster final with 15 minutes a half and a panel of 12 players, it is a very fast game of football with fitness a key ingredient. Back came Mungret who scored a super goal from Yvette Moynihan and a point from Claire Coughlan to lead by 1-1 to 0-2 after five minutes.

Araglen turned over some great ball from Claire O’Connor, Roisin Murphy, Evie Casey and Rebecca Cremin to put Ace forward Kate Dennehy in for a cracking goal and a point. Mungret also had another period of dominance and had two points from Lisa Garvey and Carol Bateman and a goal from Claire Coughlan to leave them ahead by 2-3 to 1-2 after 12 minutes.

Aoife Clifford won the ball for Araglen on her own half back line and went forward to score a tremendous goal for Arglen. The Dennehy sisters Julie and Kate combined for Julie to score a super goal on the 14th minute and take a halftime lead of 3-2 to 2-3.

We had glorious sunshine and the second half begun with points from Araglen’s Evie Casey and Claire O’Connor to put them ahead by 3-4 to 2-3. Mungret then took over again and had a cracking goal from Claire O’Meara and a point by Claire Coughlan to tie the scores after six minutes. It was all to play for and again some great defensive work by Claire O’Connor, Shannon Breen with three brilliant saves, Evie Casey and Katrina Buckley kept Mungret at bay. Megan Courtney ran at the Mungret defence and set Rebecca Cremin up for a brilliant goal on the 25 minute.

Points by Julie and Kate Dennehy and Evie Casey put Araglen ahead by six points but in 7-a-side the game can change quickly. Some great kick outs by Araglen’s goal keeper Shannon Breen and holding onto the ball by the forward was the specific requirement coming down the home stretch, Claire O’Connor, Rebecca Cremin and Kate Dennehy won some great ball and used it very well. Mungret scored a goal from Yvette Moynihan and Araglen’s Claire O’ Connor replied with a brilliant goal and victory on a score line of 5-7 to 4-4.

This was a cracking final and everything that is good about Ladies Gaelic football was displayed at this game. Referee John Murphy (Tipperary) and his team of officials did a very good job and kept the game flowing at all times.

Dan O’Mahony, Development Officer at Munster Ladies Gaelic Football presented the Intermediate Cup to Aoife Clifford amidst great scenes of joy and excitement. Aoife thanked all her team members, supporters and Team Management of Martin Farrissey, Derry Courtney and Declan Cremin.
