Cool kids take on Macroom GAA’s summer cúl camp
MACROOM GAA grounds hosted a very successful Cúl Camp last week. Ably co-ordinated by Bríd O’Riordan, assisted by Elaine Kiernan with help from her children Grace and Daragh, the club catered for an impressive 124 children.
In all 80 boys and 24 girls attended and their behaviour all week was of the highest order. There was commiserations to Matchek and Con who suffered arm injuries – both are being treated with slings and hopefully will be back playing football very soon. The club wishes them a speedy recovery.
Danny O’Keeffe and Shane Dunne were in charge of coaching and the coaches, and ensured that everyone both enjoyed themselves and improved their skills. The coaches brought fun, life and sparkle to proceedings and did an excellent job.
On the Monday of the camp, Cúl Camp County Co-ordinator Noel Crowley called and was generous with his time and advice. Legendary manager, coach and lecturer Eamon Ryan called on Tuesday and he effortlessly engaged the children’s attention and imparted many gems of knowledge.
Meanwhile, Cork football star Seán Powter visited on Thursday and he made a big impact on the players and fielded the many questions thrown to him with great skill.
In another treat, Briege Corkery, joint record holder of Senior All-Irelands, presented the medals on Friday. As well as her sporting talents, Briege is a great ‘ peoples’ person and was superb with the boys and girls. She spoke eloquently, presented the medals and posed for photos for all those present.
Cúl Camps would like to thank the parent club – particularly the juvenile section – for their help and support.
A great debt of gratitude is due to those who organized and managed the camp. The children were superb and organisers agreed that it was probably the best Macroom Cúl Camp group to date which made the week-long event pleasant and enjoyable for all.
Proceedings were completed with the traditional water battle.
The junior coaches were Seán, Ethan, Blake, Cillian, Liam, Cian, Michelle, Emer, Eibhlís, Niamh, Lily, Paul, Alan, Olan, Kieran and Eoin.
Meanwhile, back to match fixtures and Macroom GAA Minors beat Canovee in a practice game on Saturday night in the Castle Grounds. The score was Macroom 4-14, Canovee 1-12.
The Under 15s were well beaten by Clondrohid in the championship in the Castle Grounds last Wednesday. Early misses proved costly. The absence of some players did not help. Best for Macroom were Reece Lee, James Galvin, David Hunt, Jack Sexton, Shane Sweeney and Cormac Buckley.
The Under 12s were narrowly beaten by Canovee in a practice game in Carrigadrohid on Thursday and the Under 16s played Passage West recently and had a comprehensive win by 6-14 to 0-5. This is one of the clubs biggest victories.
Congratulations to the players and management.
