Munster 30x60 championships reaching clutch point
MUNSTER 60x30 championship continues during the coming week with some crucial games down for decision.
In singles championship the programme has been narrowed down with some of the finals already played and the remainder due to be completed over the next seven to ten days.
This Thursday at Hospital 7.30 start Daniel Relihan, Liscarroll play Limerick’s John Paul O’Connor in Intermediate Singles semi-final, with the winner due to play the final on the following Sunday July 30 versus the winner of Waterford v Limerick 2.
On Friday at Broadford or Hospital Dale Cusack, Mallow, faces the winner of John Ferncombe, Tipperary, versus Jack O’Shea, Kerry, with Sunday’s game having a 2pm start. If the final pairing is Ferncombe v Cusack the venue is Hospital, with a Cusack v O’Shea final going to Boadford.
On Tuesday evening at Hospital the Golden Masters B Singles Final is down for decision at 7.30 with Boherbue player Danny Lenihan facing Limerick’s Denis McCarthy.
In Golden Masters A Singles John Herlihy, St Finbarrs, will play Kevin Mullins, Tipperary, with time and venue for that final to be decided. On Thursday last at Broadford Shane Flynn, Boherbue, won Munster Junior B Singles title defeating Kerry’s Cian Counihan in two straight sets, 21-12, 21-10.
This was an important win for Shane Flynn who has been making steady progress over the past few years graduating from underage and minor to the adult stage and will now be hoping to make a bold effort to win an All-Ireland title.
In other Munster championship games over the past week in Junior Singles semi-final Fermoy player Jamie O’Donnell lost to Tipperary’s John Ferncombe 21-8, 21-18.
In Over 35 A Singles semi-final Colm Jordan, Fermoy lost to Dominic Lynch, Kerry 21-12, 21-8.
In Masters B Singles semi-final Rory O’Sullivan, Cullen, lost to Limerick’s John Penny 21-14, 21-3. In Minor Singles semi-finals David Walsh, Mallow, lost to Jerome Cahill, Tipperary, 21-8, 21-18, while in the second semi-final Conor Walsh, Mallow, lost to James Prentice, Tipperary, 21-14, 21-4.
Next week will also see the start of 60x30 Munster Doubles Championship, County Junior Doubles championship was completed last weekend with Mallow pair Tadgh Carroll/ Ryan Harkin defeating Mallow / Ballydesmond pair Dale Cusack / Donnacha O’Dea 21-20, 21-9 in the play-off to decide Cork number two pair for Munster Junior Doubles.
Dale Cusack / Donnacha O’Dea defeated Boherbue/Fermoy pair Tim Breen / Jamie O’Donnell to secure their involvement in Munster championship. Cork Doubles pairings for other grades of Munster championship have either been decided or will be finalised during coming week.
Last weekend 60x30 Irish Nationals were decided at Wexford venues with finals decided at Castlebridge in Ladies Open Singles another good result for Catriona Casey she defeated Martina McMahon, Limerick in a thrilling final which went right down to the wire with just one ace separating them in a tie break on a score of 6-15, 15-6, 11-10.
