Festival fever ramping up as Mallow prepares for big day

- BILL BROWNE

WITH less than a fortnight to go to what has been billed as ‘ the’ summer festival of the year in north Cork, excitement is building as Mallow prepares to host some of the leading lights within the Irish country music scene.

The final touches are being put in place for the inaugural North Cork Music Festival, a day-long musical celebration that will see some of the genres top artists take to the stage at the Mallow GAA Complex in Carrigoon.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to the venue for the event to hear sets from the likes of Declan Nerney, Jimmy Buckley, Lisa McHugh, Louise Morrissey and the Jonathan Owens Band.

Arguably the biggest name on the bill, Wagon Wheel singer Nathan Carter, is also looking forward to returning to Mallow having played to a crowd of just 47 people during one of his first ever Irish gigs.

Since then he has become a darling of the Irish country music scene, regularly returning to north Cork to play for his adoring fans.

His manager John Farry, said that Nathan is excited at the prospect of returning to north Cork and Mallow.

“Nathan and his team love entertaining a Munster crowd and Mallow will be no different. We played a sensational gig at the Marquee in July and know we will receive as warm a welcome in Mallow on August 20,” said John.

The chair of the festival organising committee, Liz Foley, said they are busy putting the final touches to the venue.

“We have organised a very affordable day out for all the family, with tickets priced at just €25 and children under 16 free of charge when accompanied by an adult,” said Liz.

“The line-up for the day is truly exceptional with Ireland’s leading bands performing and we anticipate that country music fans will travel from across the length and breadth of the country to enjoy the music and savour the festival atmosphere,” she added.

The gates of the venue will open at 11am, with the music running from 1pm – 7pm. There will be ample free parking on the site and food and beverage facilities available throughout the day.

Tickets are available at www. eventbrite.ie, from the ticket hotline on 022 50707 or at the gate on the day.
