Four goal Shandrum see off St Finbarrs well

‘Shandrum 4-12 St Finbarr’s 1-13

REFEREE: FOUR goals in the first half laid the foundation for ‘Shandrum to overcome St. Finbarr’s.

In the first minute Tim O’Mahony placed David Jones for a goal. Alan O’Leary added a point. Conor Cahalane opened St. Finbarr’s account in the fourth minute. The City side closed the gap with points by Bill O’Connell (free) and Stephen Sherlock.

The Avondhu side hit for their second goal in the ninth minute when Diarmuid Buckley goaled. ‘Shandrum keeper Eric Moloney made a massive save from Stephen Sherlock. David Jones and Tim O’Mahony with points made it 2- 3 to 0-3 after 18 minutes. Bill O’Connell (free) replied for the City side. Barr’s had their goal in the 23rd minute when Ian O’Callaghan worked well for Eoin O’Regan who made it 2-3 to 1- 4.

The Avondhu side were very strong down the centre. They had their third goal by John Geary after good work by Brian Buckley and David Jones. Their fourth goal came when Tim O’Mahony forced Shane Hurley to save well with the rebound coming to David Jones who opened up a lead 4 -4 to 1-5. Eoin O’Regan and Tim O’Mahony swopped a point that had ‘Shandrum ahead at the break 4-5 to 1- 6. Barr’s tried very hard to get back into contention on the changeover.

Their defence tightened up a lot but they found scores hard to secure. They had points by Eoin O’Regan and Stephen Sherlock with Corey Buckley placing Sherlock for a great point as the game entered the final quarter 4 - 5 to 1- 9.

‘Shandrum defence held firm. David Jones pointed a free with Cillian Murray replying with two points 4 - 6 to 1- 11. Timmy O’Mahony pointed for the Newtown-Dromina side with Jones adding another pointed free following a foul on O’Mahony.

Bill O’Connell replied for the City side 48 to 1- 12. In the 55th minute David Jones added another free with Tim O’Mahony following in quick succession opening up a lead 4- 10 to 1- 12.

Good play by Tim O’Mahony led to a fine point by Sean Griffin. In the 58th minute Tim O’Mahony with a point opened up a three goal lead 4-12 to 1-12. Over the hour Brian Buckley was in great form for the winners at centre back.

St Finbarr’s had the last score of the game when Shane McCarthy put Jack O’Brien through for a point. ‘Shandrum held out for an eight point win.
