BUSY WEEK OF GIGS AHEAD AT THE GLENEAGLE IN KILLARNEY

IT promises to be a busy week ahead at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney with a raft of top names set to play the ballroom as part of its summer cabaret season.

Tonight (Thursday) will see Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfetones take to the stage of the venue, with veteran crooner Dickie Rock set to return there on Friday night.

These will be followed by consecutiv­e nightly shows by singer Red Hurley renowned hypnotists Adrian Knight, Brendan Shine, Mike Denver, The Wolfe Tones and the legendary Brendan Grace.

MAGIC NIGHT OF MUSIC WITH RICKY LYNCH AT COUGHLAN’S LIVE

THE Rickey Lynch Trio will play a free gig at ‘Coughlan’s Live’ on Cork’s Douglas Street next Saturday night.

A veteran of the Leeside music scene, Ricky’s sessions incorporat­e his favourite songs from the top shelf of songwriter­s including Dylan, Lennon & McCartney, Paul Simon, Ray Davis and Johnny Cash to name but a few.

Accompanie­d by brush drums and bass, Ricky seamlessly blends these songs into a set that is pure rock and roll, punchy but without the loud.

While his sessions harp back two-decades to the Magic Nights at the Lobby, they just get better with the passage of time and a night in his company is an event to be savoured by all true music fans.

SAVOUR AM EVENING OF ECLECTIC SOUNDS WITH ART GRIMES BAND

THE Art Grimes Band will bring their exciting and eclectic sound to the stage of the Crane Lane Theatre in Cork for a free late-night gig next Tuesday.

Formed in 2011, the band released their debut album ‘Radio’ at the 2016 Guinness Jazz Festival and have toured extensivel­y fine tuning their live sets which have earned the band widespread critical acclaim.

Their sound reflects the different musical tastes of its members, mixing rock, bossa nova, reggae, disco, funk and jazz into an exciting melting pot that ensures their style is constantly evolving making each gig an uplifting experience for audiences.

CORK DUO SET TO PLAY SPANISH SOUNDS AT TRISKEL CONCERT

THE Triskel Christchur­ch Arts Centre will host a lunchtime concert at 1.10 pm on Saturday in the company of the Cork-based Fandango Guitar Duo.

The duo of David Keating and Colin McLellan will present a varied and exciting programme of primarily Spanish music including tangos and other works by de Falla, Piazzolla, Petit and Gismonti.

The event is the penultimat­e concert in a series curated by Aoife Burke for the Triskel’s summer programme, each of which has featured musicians based in Cork. The final concert in the series, featuring Clara Daly Donnellan, will take place on Friday August 18.

Admission to Saturday’s concert will be €10 at the door.

“LIKEABLE RACONTEUR” JOHNNY CAMDON AT THE COMEDY CLUB

COMEDIAN Johnny Camdon will bring his latest stand-up show to the stage of the Comedy Club on Cork’s Coburg Street on Saturday night.

One of Ireland’s most popular comedians, Camdon is a regular performer festivals across the globe and has worked with Ricky Gervais on his ‘Animals’ tour and with Neil Delamere on his ‘Creme Delamere’ Irish tour.

Described by The Scotsman as a “likeable raconteur” Camdon has an easy style and engaging presence and was a founding member of the acclaimed Robin Ince’s Book Club with Russell Brand and Stewart Lee.

Admission to Saturday nights gig will be €15/€18 at the door.

JACK L GEARING UP TO BRING HIS OWN PIECE OF MAGIC TO DE BARRAS

THE sublimely talented Jack Lukeman (aka Jack L) will bring his acclaimed ‘Magic Days’ to De Barras Folk Club In Clonakilty for a one-off performanc­e next Tuesday night.

Released at the start of this ‘Magic Day’s album earned widespread critical acclaim for its ingenious mix of genres tailored to suit Lukeman’s unique voice and enigmatic style.

Perhaps best know for his interpreta­tions of other peoples songs, Lukeman has shown that he is more than capable to producing his own memorable memories, with ‘Magic Day’s’ serving to prove he is truly a master of his craft.

HOTHOUSE FLOWERS TO GO ACOUSTIC AT THE GRAINSTORE

VETERAN Irish rockers Hothouse Flowers will play an acoustic gig at the Ballymaloe Grainstore on Saturday night.

Led by mercurial frontman Liam Ó Maonlaí the band, which has been an important elements of the Irish music scene for more than three decades, has lost none of the spirit that drove them to become one of Ireland’s most popular bands of the 1980’s.

Since then their heady mix of folk, rock, gospel and soul has matured and developed into a distinctiv­e and unique style, with no two shows being the same.

SAVOUR THE BEAUTY OF SONG WITH MARY CULLOTY O’SULLIVAN

IRISH soprano Mary Culloty O’Sullivan will perform her stunning ‘ The Beauty of Song’ recital at the Ionad Cultúrtha in Baile Mhúirne tonight (Thursday).

The concert will see O’Sullivan perform a selection of songs from stage musicals, Irish ballads and Italian and French arias.

O’Sullivan’s recent production ‘ Celtic Soprano’ was well received by critics and audiences alike, receiving rave reviews and numerous standing ovations, with her beautiful and soothing voice mesmerisin­g audiences where ever she plays.

FRIEL’S DANCING AT LUGHNASA AT THE EVERYMAN PALACE THEATRE

THE Everyman Palace Theatre is currently hosting a run of Brian Friel’s classic play Dancing at Lughnasa.

A rich and deeply moving account of the lives of the five Mundy sisters and their ailing older brother are brought to life through the eyes of Michael, son of the youngest sister, Christina.

Set in rural Ireland in 1936, the play takes an affectiona­te look at this family and the difficult circumstan­ces in which the women, in particular, attempt to hold things together.

FRED AND ALICE TO PLAY FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY AT THE FRIAR’S GATE

THE critically acclaimed CallBack Theatre’s production of ‘Fred and Alice – Love in the Time of OCD’ will play for one night next Friday (August 18) at the Friars Gate Theatre in Kilmallock.

Written and directed by John Sheehy the play star starring Ciaran Bermingham and Cora Fenton as a quirky couple who both have OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

The play is touching and comic look at two characters who live every day as if it’s exceptiona­l and reach the conclusion that all you really need to be happy are two tennis rackets, an immature coping strategy and each other.
