Library sets sights on stratosphere for Heritage Week
‘I KNOW what you did last Summer: Space and Heritage at the Space Studies Programme 2017’ – talk by Ruth McAvinia – member of the Global Faculty, International Space University is the first big event on Macroom Library’s Heritage Week programme.
The space humanities department is a fundamental part of the Space Studies Program run by the International Space University. But what does it do? Ruth McAvinia is on hand to explain it all, and make a case for Ireland’s place in the space race. It takes place on Saturday next, August 19, at 2pm and is not to be missed for space fans.
On Tuesday August 22 – Midday – Ted Cooke of the Woodland League arrives to explore the Polish couplet ‘Nie Byto Nas, Byt Las’ (the forest was here, we were not here) in a talk to mark the 30th Anniversary of the declaration of The Gearagh as a protected habitat.
Tree planting will take place at Macroom Golf Clubhouse Car park at 1pm. All are welcome and all events are free.
On Saturday August 26 at 11am a talk by Deirdre McCarthy takes place entitled ‘Looking at works around the Macroom ByPass – Archaeology along the new ByPass.’ It’s set to provide a fascinating insight into our far distant past right as well as right to the birth of our modern society.
Art Exhibition ‘Around Macroom & the Lee Valley’ by Mícheal Ó’Muirthile will meanwhile run for the month of August, with prints of originals by the artist. The window display for Heritage Week is courtesy of the Macroom Food Festival by Macroom Purlies knitting group. It will run for August and September. These talks are free and all are welcome.
