Moloney takes a PB in Aarhus

-

MALLOW Athletic Club’s Paul Moloney produced one of the best performances in his career at the 20th European Masters Championships, in Aarhus Denmark. In his debut season, Cork’s lone representative in the championships delivered a personal best in the M35 5,000m middle distance.

In doing so, Moloney lighted up the testing conditions, failed to be deterred by the driving rain. Indeed, the North Cork athlete revelled in the inclement weather, his time of 15:26:01, a PB secured fifth place overall, just 0.74 seconds off fourth place.

It’s been an eventful season for Moloney, helping Cork to win the inter county gold in the National Masters Cross Country Championship in the company of Michael Harty, Tim Twomey, Michael Herlihy, Kenneth Kelleher and Michael Harrington.

The rate of success continue indoors, on the track and at a series of road races across the county and beyond.

Athletes turn their attention this week to Lombardstowm and Liscaroll with the potential of exciting fare promises in both locations. Duhallow Athletic Club continue with their Summer series of races in Lombardstown on Thursday, August 17 evening at 8.10pm.

This 5km race is a fundraiser for the local Community Council, the entry fee, €10 per Adult, €5 - Juvenile (Under 17) and €20 for a family. Further details are available from 083-8410926. Looking ahead, the Duhallow series returns to Banteer on Thursday, September 21 for the concluding race.

All is in readiness for the popular Liscarroll 10km Road Race on this Friday(August 18) at 7.30pm. Fresh from hosting their annual sports meeting, the vibrant Liscarroll AC turn their attentions to a road race that commemorates the late Tom Fitzpatrick, a founding father of the club.

The late Tom served as club chairman for several years who took a keen interest into promoting road running.

Landing the plaudits in 2016 was Niall Shanahan (Limerick) from Eoin Sugrue (Banteer) and Maurice Feehan (Gnevveguilla) with Aoife Carroll from Mallow landing the ladies equivalent. Previous winners include Gneeveguilla AC’s Maurice Feehan from Newmarket, Deidre O’Leary (North Cork) and Michele Finn (Leevale), 20016 Olympian athlete.

The course is described as fast and furious, a flat 10Km, out and back loop.
