GAA ROUND-UP
DEFEAT IN DIVISION one LEAGUE FINAL – On Friday night last (11th) in Kildorrery, Killavullen were defeated by Buttevant in the final of the Division 1 football competition, on a final score of 3-05 to 0-05. Buttevant were gifted the three goals that we conceded, and in football, a goal is a big score, allowing the opposition to sit behind you then, and hope to catch you on the counter attacks.
The game was a very tight affair, and Buttevant got the opening score, in the sixth minute, when we lost possession of the ball very close to our own goal. We had a point back from Séamus Fox, in the 10th minute who left what he had on the pitch over the hour, and that, to be fair could be mentioned of, a lot of the team.
We were reduced to 14 men after our of our players was shown a straight red card after only 12 minutes, after misjudged his position on the field, and thinking that he was entitled to the mark, from a kick off. Aggrieved at the tackling he received, he was shown the ominous card for his indiscretion.
Buttevant scored again in the 12th and 19th minutes before another calamity at the back for us, allowing a ball to bounce in our square gave them the next goal in the 23rd minute. We were getting into good positions, and holding onto the ball well, but over the hour, we kicked 14 wides, and that is a cardinal sin in football. Buttevant scored again from their influential centre forward in the 30th minute before Ian O’Gorman scored a fine point after hard work from Liam Cronin and Charlie Lillis. The score at the break was 2-03 to 0-02.
Buttevant scored from a free in the 36th minute only for Charlie Lillis to cancel out that score in the 40th. We had the lion’s share of possession at this stage, but failed to work the openings for a clear cut chance, but got the next point from Dave Brosnan from a free, in the 43rd minute. Liam Cronin kicked through a crowd of players in the 44thh minute for our fifth score.
Buttevant scored again in the 47th minute, and the game then descended into a real slog, with neither team scoring for the next 14 minutes. It was hard football, but even the absent spectators were asking, if the Twitter machine had broken down. There had been no updates for such a long period.
Liam Cronin had a chance of a goal but was smothered out of it and we needed that goal, before a speculative shot from distance deceived our goalie in the 63rd minute to give Buttevant a comprehensive winning margin.
This was the conclusion of the league for this group of players in 2017, a year that had a lot of positives, including wins over Glanworth, Charleville, Kilshannig and Fermoy, and a draw against Mallow in the regular section of the league, and a win over Kilworth in the semi-final.
The team and those who scored were: Michael Cronin, Séamus Fox (0-01), Pa Sheehan, Dave Roche, Patrick Angland, Billy Norris, Kevin Fox, Eoghan Buckley, Colm O’Connell, Ian O’Gorman (0-01),Liam Cronin (0-01), Charlie Lillis (0-01), Dave Fitzpatrick, Barthly Hayes, David Brosnan (0-01). Substitutes: Paul O’Sullivan for Dave Fitzpatrick, Gearoid Sheahan for Séamus Fox, Lucas Sheahan for Ian O’Gorman, Pa Cronin for Dave Brosnan.
Before the game both teams stood in silence for one minute to offer sympathy and condolences to Philip Leahy, former player with many of the Killavullen team under the guises of the amalgamation that was Blackwater Rovers, between Ballyhooley and Killavullen. The national flag stood at half-mast in Kildorrery.

CORK TEAM IN CROKE PARK
Killavullen, as did every other parish in Cork, sent throes of people north last Sunday to support Cork in their all-Ireland semi-final against Waterford, in Croke Park. Among the crowd of 72,020 was a bus, organised by John Hannon, principal of Ballygown School.
Though Cork were ultimately defeated, the day was memorable for each of the young people involved, and with a steely resolve, we will win back Liam McCarthy very soon, and we will have throes there again. Corcaigh abú.
BEAST OF BOTTLE HILL
Killavullen GAA Club salutes Blackwater Cycling club in their time trials which occurred last weekend. From Nano Nagle terrace, up the Cork Road, to the summit in Knuttery, and onwards to Bottle Hill, this was a good test of all that participated.
Conor Kissane covered the 15km route in 21 minutes and 21.5 seconds and won the elite section. Our very own Joe Taylor came second in the men’s category, covering the same distance in 24 minutes and 21.4 seconds. JP Lombard came second in the junior category, achieving an average speed of 28.72 Km/hr and a time of 27minutes and 47.1 seconds. That is some cycling.
