-

A 44 year old North Corkman has been remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of a mother of three who was found with fatal head injuries in a flat in Cork city earlier this year.

Cathal O’Sullivan, a native of Charleville, was charged with the murder of Kerry-born Nicola Collins at his flat at Popham’s Road, Farranree, on the northside of Cork city on March 27 last.

Mr O’Sullivan replied “not guilty” when the charge was put to him after caution, Det Sgt O’Sullivan told the court. A graduate of University College Cork, Mr O’Sullivan did not speak during the five minute hearing in Cork District Court on Wednesday, except to confirm his identity.

Ms Collins, a native of Tralee, was found with serious head injuries by emergency services when they were called to Popham’s Road around 3am on March 27.

Paramedics worked to try and revive her but they were unsuccessful in their efforts and she was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor.

Gardai initially treated her death as ‘suspicious’ and later upgraded their inquiry to a murder investigation based on post mortem examination results.
