Immerse yourself in the Rebel county’s rich cultural legacy

- BILL BROWNE

CULTURE vultures will be in seventh heaven on Friday, September 22, with an extensive programme of events planned to celebrate Ireland’s rich and vibrant cultural heritage.

The public have been issued with an open invitation to become part of the annual Culture Night – a celebration highlighting the astounding wealth of cultural heritage that abounds on our doorstep.

Now in its seventh year, the nationwide initiative has become instrumental in inspiring individual communities to shine a light on the wide, varied and fascinating cultural heritage that has made Ireland the envy of many other countries across the world.

On Culture Night people are invited to immerse themselves in this and be part of an evening of entertainment, discovery and adventure in the company of historians, musicians and artists.

Museums, galleries, churches, historic houses, artists’ studios and cultural centres will remain open until late in the evening, with people encouraged to wander in and out to sample their sights and sounds.

A full programme of events has been planned for the Rebel county and city, offering people of all ages a superb opportunity to immerse themselves in our history and rekindle their love of all things Cork.

With more than 200 events taking place in over 100 venues across Cork there will be plenty going on to suit all ages and tastes – one of which will cost a single red cent.

From Blarney to Baltimore, from Kanturk to Kinsale from Mallow to the City and County Hall’s the county will come alive honouring the vision and enthusiasm of individuals and communities whose efforts have ensured Cork remains a thriving cultural hub.

Highlights will include music and dancing in Fermoy, Clonakilty and Cork City, theatre in Mallow and tours of historical sites and museums across the county.

County Mayor, Cllr Declan Hurley, urged people to take the opportunity to immerse themselves in Cork’s culture for the night.

“I wish to thank all of the organisation, artists and venues who give their time and energy to organise free, exciting events for their communities to enjoy,” said Cllr Hurley.

“Culture Night only comes around once a year and I would encourage everyone to come along on Friday, September 22 to explore, experience and enjoy all the county has to offer.”
