Plan ahead to catch the best of the night across North and mid- Cork

AS with previous years there will be plenty going on across the county on Culture Night, with the north and mid- Cork regions leading the way when it comes to the scope of events planned for Friday, September 22.

A carefully planned schedule for the night could see people taking in a range of events at various locations, expanding their appreciati­on of the region and its unique cultural identity.

From visual art to music, theatre and dance, and from literature to talks and tours, the programme of events for the night is as broad as it is interestin­g. So there is no excuse for people not to get on the road and savour as much as they can of what is one offer.

The Ionad Cultúrtha in Baile Mhúirne will host a social evening at 7.30pm featuring a variety of Múscrai’s singers, musicians and performers, including a special performanc­e by the renowned Ballingear­y Pipe Band. The evening will focus in particular on sean-nós singing, the oral tradition of agallaimh beirte and lúibíní and storytelli­ng.

The library in Blarney will open up its archives for a family and local history evening, with the Schoolyard Theatre and Arts Centre in Charlevill­e hosting an evening of traditiona­l music from 7-pm – 8.15pm.

In Fermoy, the Thomas Kent Pipe Band will play a selection of musical gems outside the CMYS Hall Parish Centre in Fermoy from 7.45pm with an evening of poetry, song and music taking place at the Elbow Lane Inn.

The Daily Grind Cafe in Kanturk will host rehearsed readings of new plays by Aidan O’Keeffe and Mary Angland from 8pm, with the nearby castle holding a ‘Medieval Experience’ evening from 6pm incorporat­ing sword fighting, archery and falconry displays.

The Mallow Arts Collective will present ‘Cultural Cafés’ an exciting night of music, song and poetry in local cafés from 6pm-8pm and the Culture Night concert in St James’s Church at 8.30pm, with the Lightbulb Theatre hosting a drama workshop in the Mercy Centre from 7pm-8pm.

The Glanworth Players will hold ‘Embracing Our Culture’, a celebratio­n of Irish drama, song and dance at the local community hall from 8.30pm, the Mitchelsto­wn Young Filmmakers will screen two short films made locally at the Forrest Hall building from 6.30pm, with the Newmarket Pipe Band and Friends performing a recital in the town from 7.30pm.

Aghinagh Comhaltas will host an evening of music, dance and storytelli­ng at the Castle hotel in Macroom from 9pm-11pm, members of Ballincoll­ig Comhaltas will hold a similar style event at the local shopping centre from 5.30pm and a ‘Global Stories and Dance’ event taking place from 6.30pm at the Whitechurc­h Community Complex.
