City set to be a hive of activity on Culture Night
AS Ireland’s second city, Cork has always prided itself on being every bit as attractive to visitors as the capital, with hidden and not so hidden gems dominating the skyline and around almost every street corner.
For Culture Night 2016
Cork City Council is orchestrating hundreds events in dozens of locations across the city and has invited people to celebrate the city’s colourful culture by bike, bus or on foot. Here’s a favour of just some of the highlights across a range of categories:
The sound of beautiful music will be seeping out from the walls of venues across the city, with the
City Hall hosting events under the auspices of Music Generation Cork City in conjunction with other community groups. These will include music and dance demonstrations and an evening concert featuring young acts across a range of genres.
The Cork Light Orchestra will play a concert of 1920s/30s style jazz and swing at the Cork City Gaol from 6pm7pm and the Lee Session Trad Trail will take people on a musical journey across the city from 5pm, with people able to sample the delights of some of its best know pubs along the way.
Libraries, colleges and schools across the city will be busy playing host to exhibitions, workshops and concerts, while the City and County Archives will open its doors from 6-8pm, with a guided tour at 7pm.
The city’s rich and vibrant culinary scene will be celebrated through a series of mouth-watering events with the world famous English Market open for business late into the night and tours and beer tasting at The Franciscan Well Brewery.
A series of guided walks and tours will traverse the city across the whole of Friday taking in some of Cork’s landmark buildings including the City Gaol, Elizabeth Fort, The Lifetime Lab, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and the UCC Visitor’s Centre.
