Kanturk Hospital applauds retired matron
RECENTLY retired Matron of Kanturk Hospital Peg Fitzgerald was honoured at a get together at Bob’s Bar and Restaurant when family, colleagues, and friends gathered to applaud her for her outstanding contribution to the Hospital over a 15 year period.
Dr Brendan Payne, speaking on behalf of the local GPs, thanked Peg on behalf of all the Doctors. “The open door policy that she has implemented is just fantastic, in addition to acquiring new equipment, fundraising, and making the time to chat to residents and keep their spirits up” he said.
Barbara Ryan (Director of Nursing at Fermoy Community Hospital) said that Peg was a fantastic colleague providing a great support network and exceptional leadership skills; “she will be sorely missed,” Barbara added.
Breda O’ Sullivan (North Cork Placement Co-ordinater) said that Peg led by example and showed great kindness and compassion, while Eily May Hickey said that Peg’s care of patients, their families, and staff at the Hospital has been exceptional throughout the years.
Micheal Moynihan TD paid tribute to Peg for the way she managed the Hospital; “You led a team that gave an exceptional level of care and attention, and as you leave you should be very proud of what you have achieved” he said. Michael also passed on the compliments of his colleague Michael Creed who could not attend the function.
In reply Peg said that she was overwhelmed by the amount of people present and the representatives from all disciplines.
“I could not have strived for the goals I’ve reached without the support of my family” she said, adding: “Also the thanks I got from the residents and their families really touched my heart, we have a lovely homely, well manned and well equipped facility in Kanturk with a reputation for excellent care”.
Peg went on to wish her successor, Joan Collins, well in her role as temporary Matron, and said that she hopes Joan will consider taking up the position on a permanent basis.
