MALLOW UTD JUNIORS SIDE RETURNS WITH A FLOURISH

-

AFTER a one year absence, competitive Junior soccer was warmly welcomed back to the Town Park last Sunday afternoon with a supportive crowd in attendance and Mallow United wasted little time in making the most of the occasion.

In a game where the result rarely looked in doubt, Mallow’s Damien Doody opened the scoring after just eight minutes with a long range effort that he kept low and out of reach of the Douglas Hall keeper.

Mallow continued to pile on the pressure and should have increased their lead on a number of occasions; however, the Douglas Hall defence stood firm. The second goal did come at the 30 minute mark with Jay Clow finishing neatly after an excellent build up and Mallow went into the half time break with a two goal lead.

A resilient Douglas gave Mallow some cause for concern early in the second half, pulling a goal back and reducing Mallow’s lead to one goal. Mallow responded again, however, with Jay Clow getting his second with a fine finish on the volley and completing his hat-trick to make it 4-1 to Mallow with half an hour remaining on the clock.

Mallow’s Darren Griffin was introduced to the game with 20 minutes remaining and within 10 minutes had found the back of the net three times, all from set pieces; however, one of his efforts was disallowed for offside with the final score of 6-1.

The Mallow line out was Michael Murphy, Adrian Potoniec, Barry Doyle, Sean Woulfe, Brian Doody, Dave Barrow, Damien Doody, John Kelleher, Jay Clow, Derek O’Flynn, Anthony Bowles; subs: Darren Griffin for Jay Clow, Adam Lucey for Michael Murphy, Darren Lynch for Dave Barrow.

Meanwhile, Mallow United visited the Irish Guide Dogs facility on the Model Farm Road, Cork last week where they presented a cheque for €1,175 to the charity on behalf of the club. The Mallow United delegate were welcomed by Anne Burns and Jodie the dog and were given a tour of the state of the art facilities.

The proceeds were raised during the Mallow United 100 Cup. Mallow United would like to thank to all who contributed to such a worthy cause and thank Anne Burns of Irish Guide Dogs for the tour of their great facilities.

The 2017/18 Cork Schoolboys League kicks-off this weekend with a continually expanding Mallow United fielding 14 different teams from U10 to U15. This is an opportune time to remember that underage football at Mallow United is primarily about having fun and the club firmly believes in the FAI policy of ‘Let the Players Play and Let the Coaches Coach’.

Mallow United would like to wish all players, coaches and parents the best of luck for the season.
