Brosna honours Danny Hannon
IT’S a rare occasion indeed that a rendering of My Native Brosna Town isn’t sung in celebration or in sadness in the village for which it was so lovingly written and is so clearly associated.
Daniel J. ‘Danny’ Hannon, who was born in Knockawinna, wrote the song, as an exile in America where he lived from 1948 until he died on October 26, 1989. Now, a festival in his honour is in its second year in his native Brosna town and there is an impressive list of events making up the weekend long celebration.
The programme of events for this weekend’s Daniel J.Hannon Folk Festival 2017 includes the opening on Friday, August 25 with a senior GAA football game between neighbours Brosna and Rockchapel at Pairc na Féile at 7:30pm for the Con Carey Cup, with a post-match gathering in the Sportsfield Bar.
On Saturday, August 26 at 11am a 3k, 5k and 10k there’s the John Hannon Memorial Fun Run in memory of Danny Hannon’s late son.
