Kanturk see off Charlevill­e

Kanturk 1-22 Charlevill­e 0-21

KANTURK and Charlevill­e played out an entertaini­ng Co IHC Round 2A game at Kilbrin on Sunday.

The sides were level on five occasions throughout the first half. Donncha Kenneally and Darragh Fitzgibbon swopped an early point. Kenneally gave Kanturk the lead with Liam O’Keeffe pointing a free.

Another pointed free by O’Keeffe opened up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after seven minutes. Darragh Fitzgibbon tagged on a second Charlevill­e point with Lorcan O’Neill with a long range point moving the Duhallow side 0-5 to 0-2 clear.

Mark Kavanagh was deadly accurate from frees for the Rathluirc side. He pointed two rapid frees with Cian Collins with a long range free levelling at 0-5 each after 15 minutes. Charlevill­e edged ahead with a pointed ‘65 by Kavanagh.

In the 19th minute Donncha Kenneally levelled with a very good point 0-7 each. Charlevill­e hit the front with quick points by Jack Doyle and Andrew Cagney. They moved 3 clear when Mark Kavanagh pointed a very difficult free.

The puck-out by Anthony Nash found Lorcan McLoughlan who found the net for the only goal of the game. This was a significan­t boost to the Duhallow side. John Browne was in great form for Kanturk.

Good play by Browne found Donncha Kenneally who pointed. In the closing moments pointed frees by Liam O’Keeffe (2) and Mark Kavanagh kept Kanturk ahead. Good play by Liam O’Keeffe and Donncha Kenneally led to a well taken John Browne point on the run. James Kennedy and John Browne swopped another point with Mark Kavanagh with a free deep in injury time cutting the lead at the break 1-12 to 0- 13.

On the resumption Anthony Nash saved very well from Mark Kavanagh. A foul on Darragh Fitzgibbon led to a pointed free by Kavanagh. Lorcan McLoughlan followed with a point.

Both sides were off target with Darragh Fitzgibbon being denied a good goal scoring chance by the alert Anthony Nash. Charlevill­e keeper Cian Collins also did very well saving from Lorcan McLoughlan.

Jack Barry who played very well for the Rathluirc side pointed on 40 minutes 1-13 to 0- 15. Lorcan McLoughlan with a free opened up a two point lead entering the final quarter 1-14 to 0-15.

Mark Kavanagh with another free closed the gap to the minimum. Lorcan McLoughlan with a great point was followed by a Darragh Fitzgibbon point after good link up play with Brendan Dennehy.

In the 49th minute John Browne landed a long range point. Both sides continued to score points with Kanturk a goal clear by the 54th minute 1-19 to 0- 19. Good play by John Browne led to a fine point by Darren Browne Darragh Fitzgibbon replied for Charlevill­e.

Ian Walsh and Anthony Nash (free) with late points saw the Kanturk side emerge winners by a four point margin. Charlevill­e now meet Courcey Rovers with the winner facing Kanturk in the quarter-final.
