Mallow make amends in league final

-

Mallow 3-10 Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels 0-11

AFTER losing last year’s league final to Kilshannig, Mallow junior hurlers made amends at Doneraile on Friday evening when they ran out deserving winners over Liscarroll/ Gaels in this season’s Cavanagh’s Fermoy Div 2 HL final.

Played in windy conditions the winners had the aid of the elements in the first half. They were quick to build up an early lead when Fergal McCormack (2) Rory Downey and Kieran Byrne had minors to move 0-4 to no score in front by the sixth minute.

Despite a good start Mallow found it very hard to extend their lead with Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels quickly settling. In the 10th minute Mark Fitzpatrick set up Daniel Curtin for a well taken point.

A good solo run by Shane Hedigan moments later produced another point for the Gaels. The remainder of the half was very close with both teams enjoying their moments.

Jimmy Glynn and Kieran Curtin traded a point by the end of the first quarter with Mark Roche and Kieran Curtin continuing the trend by the 22nd minute.

Liscarroll / Churchtown Gaels had the lead down to the narrowest of margins three minutes later when Kieran Curtin pointed a free 0-6 to 0-5. At this stage Liscarroll / Churchtown Gaels with the aid of the wind in the second half looked in a very good position.

However, in the closing moments Mallow struck for a vital score when a puck-out by keeper Padraigh Buckley found Fionn Moynihan and after linking up well with Kieran Byrne they set up the well placed Fergal McCormack for a goal.

Liscarroll / Churchtown Gaels completed the scoring at the end of normal time courtesy of Shane Hedigan and it reduced the margin at the interval to 1-6 to 0-6.

On the changeover Liscarroll / Churchtown Gaels with the aid of the wind looked in a great position of getting the better of their opponents.

However they were dealt an early blow when a delivery by Fionn Moynihan ended up in the Liscarroll / Churchtown Gaels net in the 32nd minute. It was immediately followed with a well taken score by Jimmy Glynn to move seven points clear.

Liscarroll / Churchtown Gaels tried hard to make headway. Kieran Curtin pointed two frees by the 37th minuter to trail 2-7 to 0-8. Mallow who had some fine displays by Gavin O’Sullivan, Ronan Mills, Kenneth Mills, Brian O’Riordan, Fionn Moynihan, Fergal McCormack, Kieran Byrne and Rory Downey who was named ‘man of the match’ stretched their lead in their next attack when Fionn Moynihan and Fergal McCormack linked up well to set up Kieran Byrne for their third goal that opened up a sizeable advantage 3-7 to 0-8.

The last 20 minutes was a low scoring encounter with both sets of defences holding the edge. Both Mallow and the Gaels added three points apiece. Fergal McCormack was on target for the winners with three frees while Daniel Curtin, Peter Crowley and David Collins had points for the Gaels.

After the game North Cork Board Chairman Barry Aherne presented the cup to the winning captain Kieran Byrne amongst a large Mallow gathering.
