Joyce makes it third generation of Doctors Leader in Boherbue

- SHEILA FITZGERALD

DOCTOR Leader’s practice in Boherbue, which has been synonymous with outstanding patient care in a friendly and homely environment since the early 1950s, welcomed a new member to the team recently.

However, what is extra special is that Dr Joyce Leader, the daughter of Dr. Len and Dr. Mary, is the third generation of the family of medics at the practice, which was established in Boherbue in 1953 by Len’s father, Dr. Leo Leader and his wife, Dr. Irene.

Dr. Joyce brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the job. She is an honours graduate from UCD, worked as an intern in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin and trained in Medicine, Pediatrics, ENT, Psychiatry and Obstetrics.

Joyce has also served as a volunteer in Africa, where she was the only doctor working in a hospital based at Lake Malawi. She was also involved in organizing community education groups and ran wound clinics where she treated everything from lacerations to crocodile bites!

On her return from Africa she did a four-year training course in general practice. Her specialty is female health and pediatrics.

While it is fairly certain Dr. Joyce will not have to deal with any crocodile bites at the surgery in Boherbue, there is no doubt patients can be assured that this bright, young, enthusiastic doctor will add immeasurably to the already superb team at the practice.
