LADIES FOOTBALL

JUNIOR A CHAMPIONSHIP – On Sunday, August 26, a big task was ahead of the junior team as this was a must win game to throw the championship wide open. With two games lost and one game won, a win today would see the girls be in the running for a semi-final spot.

With the sun beaming, it was perfect conditions for a game of fast paced football. A Fiona Daly free that hit the back of the Valley Rovers net within the first two minutes gave Dromtarriffe a fantastic start. Two points on the go from centre half forward Máire O’Connor gave Dromtarriffe a lead 1-2 to 0-0 but the Innishannon side had pace and skill that was hard to control and the Valley Rovers Full forward line banged on 1-2 to see level leggings at the 15 minute mark.

Valleys took the lead to go 1-4 to 1-2 but points from o Connor and Daly along with a bullet of a goal from Rachel Jones gave the Dromtarriffe girls and advantage of 2-6 to 1-5 at the break.

Valleys started the much stronger side after the break with their full forward and corner forward banging in goals into the Dromtarriffe net but outstanding work rate from Erica O’Connell, Claire O’Keeffe and Chloe Collins, who fed the ball to the danger duo Kate O’Keeffe and O’Connor saw Dromtarriffe slowly climb back the deficit.

With 10 minutes left valleys lead 4-5 to 2-10 and seemed to be the side with the most danger on the attack. Valleys increased the lead to 4-8 to 2-12 with three minutes left. Dromtariffe’s pressure on the Valley Rovers kick out saw Daly, O’Keeffe and O’Connor points to secure a one point win in what was an exciting game of football.

All that’s left now is a wait to see how Valley Rovers and St Val’s get on to determine the championship for the girls.
