Three injured in B/collig row

GARDAI are appealing for witnesses to an incident on Tuesday evening in Ballincollig during which a man received serious stab and slash wounds during an altercation.

The man, who is understood to be a Latvian national, sustained the injuries when he was attacked along with two other men at a property in the Castlepark Estate just before 9pm in an incident which spilled out onto the street.

Initial reports indicated that the trio were confronted by a number of men armed with a variety of weapons including knives, slash hooks and clubs.

The ensuing melee, which involved up to seven men, only ended after it became apparent that the middle-aged man had sustained serious injuries.

A number of local residents called the emergency services and while Gardaí were on the scene within minutes all parties involved in the incident had left the area.

Some time later three men presented to the emergency department at the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) for treatment.

One of them was treated for stab and slash wounds, which while serious were not life threatening.

The remaining two men, the son of the first man and a family friend, were treated for minor injuries.

Gardaí launched an investigation after discovering bloodstains at the scene of the altercation.

They sealed off the area to allow experts from the Garda technical bureau to undertake a detailed examination of the scene.

Officers also carried out door-to-door enquiries and are also plan to review CCTV footage shot from a number of businesses in the general area in a bid to determine if anyone fleeing the scene was caught on camera.

While Gardaí are yet to receive a formal complaint in relation to the incident at time of going to press, it is believed they were hoping to interview the three men who presented themselves at the MUH.
