Mitchelstown footballers on a winning run

- With Paddy Ryan pryan@corkman.ie

IT proved a good weekend for the local GAA. Mitchelstown’s Intermediate footballers secured a well-deserved 1-13 to 0-11 win over Millstreet in the County Intermediate Football Championship at Churchtown on Saturday, securing the team’s place in the fourth round of the competition.

A goal by Stephen Fox in the run-up to half time proved decisive, as the eventual winners went in at the break with a four-point lead and a little breathing space, and they nursed that advantage expertly in the game’s second half.

That second period proved a tighter affair, but there was to be no denying the Town, as they eventually ran up a 1-13 to 0-11 winning scoreline. Alongside goalscorer Fox, Seán Walsh top-scored with a useful contribution of three points.

There’ll be no rest for Mitchelstown to celebrate the win, however.

Next up for the Town, it’s a fourth-round fixture in Mallow against Ballydesmond on Saturday.

The team last weekend was as follows: Luke Hanna, Barry Coffey, Kevin Wrenn, Lorcan Finn, Sean O’Sullivan, Stephen Fox 1-0, Pat Magee 0-2, Sean Walsh 0-3, Shane Beston 0-1, Michael Walsh 0-1, Dave Dineen 0-1, James Sheehan, Cathal O’Mahony, Shane Cahill 0-1, Liam Keane 0-2 (0-1f )

Subs : Laurance O’Flynn for Michael Walsh, Jason Cott 0-1, for James Sheehan, Dylan ReidyPrice 0-1 for Liam Keane, Pa Molloy for Kevin Wrenn, Liam Molan for Shane Cahill.
