All set for Festival of History 2017!

THE all-conquering Shandrum Ceili Band will be playing for a ceili at the Charlevill­e Park Hotel on this Saturday night, while on the same night and in the same venue, local actor William Lyons will be reprising his award-winning performanc­e in the one-man play, ‘A Night in November’ by Marie Jones.

These are just part of the weekend programme for Charlevill­e Heritage Society’s Festival of History, for which, all is in readiness for the sixth annual event.

The weekend has the theme Éigse Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill, and will be opened at the Charlevill­e Park Hotel on this Thursday September 7 by Kerry poet Gabriel Fitzmauric­e, who will deliver a short lecture on the Jacobite poet.

The opening will be followed by a night of spoken word, music and craic featuring local poets Sr. Bernadette Marie, Fiona Fitzpatric­k, , to kick off a terrific weekend of entertainm­ent, which sees a gala concert on Friday night which features former RTE television presenter Bibi Baskin, TG4’s Glór Tíre finalist, top musician, Dermot Lyons, the Cahirmee Singers from Buttevant, story teller Jim Barry, Charlevill­e Folk Group, Musica Fusion’s junior orchestra, the musicians of Craobh An Rath Comhaltas, singers Billy O’Brien and John Murphy, harpist Rachel O’Connor and dancer Kelley Hartnett.

Members of the Charlevill­e Library Writer’s Group will perform readings at the local library on Friday morning at 11am and this will be followed by a discussion on creative writing I n the community led by Denyse Woods the Writer in Residence at Cork County Library and Arts Service.

This is a free event so everybody is invited to come along for great stories, great writing and brilliant fun. Then on the following morning at 9.30am poet Noel King from Tralee will deliver a poetry workshop at the Provincial Heritage Centre at the Convent of Mercy, and admission to this event is free.

A delegation from Croesgoch Heritage Society in Wales will be attending the weekend at which the twinning arrangemen­t between them and the Charlevill­e Heritage Society will be signed. A walking tour to places of historical interest will take place on Sunday afternoon to bring the weekend to a close.

Certainly, this is not a weekend that you will want to miss out on.
