GAA ROUND-UP

UNDER 16S QUALIFY FOR THE LEAGUE FINAL–Killavullen saw off the stubborn resistance and considerable talent of Newmarket last night, the 31st August in the Semi Final of the Rebel Óg North B2 Hurling league on a final score of 5-11 to 3-10

The game was only seconds old when a Newmarket player got an injury, that caused the game to be delayed for close on 12 minutes. Thankfully, the face guard did what it was designed to do, and prevent a very serious eye injury. Colm Looney got through on goal, and finished to the net after 5 minutes of play. Newmarket replied with a point in the same minute.

Mikey O Connor then masterfully controlled a Mark Nagle delivery on his hurl, and fired it over the bar in the 7th minute. Next Ronan Barry and Colm combined with Mikey for the later to score a goal at the post.

Newmarket scored again in the 13th minute and a point from a free in the 17th before Darragh O Grady scored a lovely point, after the ball was cleverly worked up field by Brian Cotter to Ben Hunter and ultimately over the bar by Darragh.

James O Keeffe brought off two outstanding saves around this time, so our lead was slightly flattering.

Darragh scored another point in the 23rd minute after Michael Cagney had impressively broken the line. Mikey scored a free in the 27th minute before Ronan Barry capped a memorable first half for himself, with a neat goal in the 29th minute.

The game was held up again for another blood injury to a Newmarket player, their star man in midfield, who worked tirelessly for them, but they responded with two points in quick succession before Fionn Magner scored a long range point for us, to bring the half time tally to 3-05 to 0-05

Newmarket got the initial 3 points of the second period, in the 31st, 32nd and 33rd minute before Mikey O Connor halted their momentum temporarily with a point in the 35th minute. He scored again in the 37th only for Newmarket to breach our rear guard with a goal in the same period. 3=9707 now to 1-08.

Darragh O Grady scored a point in the 40th minute, Newmarket replied with another point, the very next minute. This was a very good game now, hard and uncompromising, with Liam Fox, Cian O Connor and Mikey Looney very prominent in repelling their attacks. Brian Cotter and Mark Nagle cleared their lines impressively but Newmarket showed what a good team they were with several insightful raids. Ronan Barry worked the ball forward to Colm Looney who fired it over the bar, in the 43rd minute. Mikey tacked over a point after Michael Cagney had fought hard to regain possession in the 45th minute.

Newmarket scored again in the 47th minute, and then, really make a thrust for victory in the 54th minute with a good goal from their impressive centre forward. 3-10 to 2-10 with 5 minutes left, and we were under the cosh, but we responded well, led by Fionn Magner who hauled us up the field, and after a series of forays, Darragh O Grady bravely got in on goals, and scored, in the 55th.

Darragh and Colm combined again but they were thwarted only to get another goal for us, in the 58th minute. Newmarket countered with a goal of their own, but Mikey scored his final point of the night, his fifth overall, in injury time to see us through to the final on a closing score of 5-11 to 3-10

This was a good game of hurling, and great preparation for the championship next Monday night, against a fanciful Kildorrery team.

The team and those who scored was: James O Keeffe, Cian O Connor, Liam Fox, Mark Nagle, Brian Cotter, Mikey Looney, Michael Cagney, Fionn Magner (0-01), Ronan Barry (1-00), Darragh O Grady (2-03), Ben Hunter, Colm Looney (1-1), Mikey O Connor (1-05)

With a number of players out injured, we had no substitutes on the night, and were extremely grateful for Michael & Ronan stepping up from the Under 14 squad.
