Hurlers into county semi-final

-

WHEN the draws for round four and subsequent rounds of the Cork Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship were made a few months ago the possibility of Kanturk and Charleville meeting twice arose and was not an enticing prospect for either team as repeating a championship victory against the same opposition a few weeks apart could prove a tall order, just as the Cork Senior hurlers found out in the current year.

Kanturk travelled to Milford on Saturday last for a quarter final clash with Charleville, three weeks after their second round tie in Kilbrin, which the Duhallow side won by four points. If Kanturk supporters had any fears of a Charleville lash back they were quickly allayed as Kanturk built up a 0-6 to 0-2 lead by the midway stage of the opening half.

Leading by 0-13 to 0-07 at the interval, Kanturk put any thoughts of a Charleville fight back with an early second half goal and ran out winners on a 1-22 to 0-14 score line.

Victory sets Kanturk up with a semi-final clash with Ballinhassig, which is part of a double header at Pairc Ui Rinn on this Saturday, 16th September. The second semi-final, involving Cloyne and Mallow, gets underway at 5.30pm with the Kanturk v Ballinhassig tie down for 7.15pm. Ballinhassig defeated Inniscarra, Carrigaline and Fr O’Neills on their direct route to the semi-final. Kanturk for their part also went the direct route, defeating Castlelyons and Charleville twice to reach this stage.
