Kiltha Og with strong second half take County U-16 title

Kiltha Og 5-9 Mallow 3-9

KILTHA Og took the Carrigalin­e Court County U-16 Premier 2A HC title at Blarney on Sunday when they overcame Mallow in the replayed final. This was a highly entertaini­ng game with the winners having five goals all at vital stages that saw them comfortabl­e winners.

Mike Leahy opened the scoring with an early pointed free for the East Cork side. Mallow levelled in the sixth minute when Niall O’Riordan pointed a free. The same player edged Mallow in front from a ‘65’. Kiltha Og were on level terms in the 11th minute when Kyle Quinn-Waites pointed. Mallow again hit the front when Colm O’Doherty pointed a long range free. In the 15th minute good play by Ciaran Joyce led to an equalising point by Kyle Quinn-Waites.

The Castlemart­yr-Dungourney side hit the front when Kyle Quinn-Waites had the first of his three goals. The same player pointed a free. In the 22nd minute a good movement by Mallow started by Sean O’Riordan, Ryan Clifford and Niall O’Riordan led to a well taken goal by Charlie Carroll that saw the Avondhu side come within a point 1-4 to 1-3.

Coming up to half time another pointed free by Niall O’Riordan had the sides level 1-4 each. Deep in injury time a foul on Mikey Duignan led to a pointed free by Cian O’Driscoll as Mallow led at the break 1-5 to 1-4.

On the resumption Mallow had Sean McDonnell and Niall O’Riordan at midfield. Kiltha Og had the wind in this half. In the opening minutes Mallow had their second goal when Niall O’Riordan put Charlie Carroll through. A long range free by Cian O’Driscoll found Stephen O’Flynn who placed Charlie Carroll for a fine point as Mallow moved 2-6 to 1-4 clear.

Gradually Kiltha Og got on top in the half backline and midfield sectors. Kyle Quinn-Waites pointed and the same player was put through for a goal in the 36th minute by Stephen O’Flynn as they came within a point 2-6 to 2-5. Mallow added a point by Charlie

Carroll. Kiltha Og hit the front when Eoghan Martin placed Andrew Kelly who goaled. Two minutes later Andrew Kelly and James Aherne worked well for Kyle Quinn-Waites who made it 3-6 to 2-7. Entering the final quarter Kiltha Og captain Eoghan Martin gave a kick pass to Kyle Quinn-Waites who made it 4-6 to 2-7.

Ciaran Joyce with a pointed free opened up a two goal lead 4-7 to 2-7. Niall O’Riordan and Kyle Quinn-Waites swopped a point before Mallow forced a 21 metre free. The shot by Charlie Carroll was well saved by Daire Coughlan and the danger averted. Niall O’Riordan followed with a Mallow point. In the 25th minute Kiltha Og had their 5th goal when Kyle Quinn-Waites kicked to Niall Morgan who goaled and made it 5-9 to 2-9.

Mallow got a late goal from a long range free by Cian O’Driscoll. They tried very hard to get another goal in injury time but time ran out and Kiltha Og were champions. THIS Rebel Og North U-16 A HC game at Glanworth on Monday evening was evenly contested all through. Jake Carr and Darragh O’Flynn were star players for each side accounting for 0-9 each over the hour.

When these sides met in the league five weeks previously Ballygibli­n were comprehens­ive winners. On this occasion Fermoy were a far more determined side. Jake Carr and Darragh O’Flynn exchanged pointed frees. Good play by Ben Twomey led to a fine point by Carr. Christy O’Sullivan levelled after six minutes.

Good play by James Coughlan led to a lead point by O’Flynn. Fermoy were back on terms for the third time when James Fitzpatric­k pointed. Good play by Cian O’Brien led to a lead point by Cormac Roche. Diarmuid O’Gorman levelled for the fourth and last time after good play along the flank by Darragh O’Flynn. Fermoy did well for the rest of the half.

They improved greatly in the half backline and they had six points to just two for Ballygibli­n in this period. Ballygibli­n points by Darragh O’Flynn (free) and Adam Gubbins. The winners 6 points came from Jake Carr (4) Cormac Roche and Cian O’Brien 0-10 to 0-6 at half time.

Darragh O’Flynn pointed on the resumption. Fermoy’s Jack Waters worked well for Duncan Ekechukwk who scored a fine point 0-11 to 0-7. Ballygibli­n relied mainly on Darragh O’Flynn for scores. O’Flynn with two frees cut the lead to 2 points 0-11 to 0- 9. Darragh Daly and Darragh O’Flynn swapped a point by the 40th minute. Ballygibli­n got within a single point when Christy O’Sullivan worked well for Diarmuid O’Gorman who pointed. Good play by Jack Waters and Cormac Roche led to a vital point by Ben Twomey. Jake Carr added another as Fermoy edged 0-14 to 0-11 clear entering the final quarter.

Darragh O’Flynn was denied a good goal scoring chance by Fermoy keeper Liam Clancy. Two further pointed frees by Jake Carr completed their tally in the 56th minute. Ballygibli­n battled to the end. Darragh O’Flynn had two pointed frees. They were unable to get any closer with Fermoy holding out for a close but deserved win.
