LADIES FOOTBALL

Kilshannig ladies’ football under-13s had a great win in their summer league replay with a win over a fantastic Glanworth side last week in Killavullen. After the sides both finished all square in the first game at Castlemagner, it was always a game that the two sides were going to battle out in round two.

The game got off to a great start in front of an excited crowd. The heat on the day was very warm, so the two teams did well to give us a class performance. The game ended on a scoreline of 3-7 to 3-4. With some excellent scores from all over the field rom both sets of players. Thanks to Glanworth for such a sporting game on both days.

The girls have been working hard all year and it was great for them to get some reward having picked up the clubs first silverware of 2017, with more to follow in the coming months hopefully from all our other teams.

They now turn their attentions to the under-14 North Cork Final. They take on Mallow this Friday, September 15, at 6.30 p.m.

The girls will be hoping to continue their winning ways after the under-13 summer league win, to add another title to the years efforts come Friday night. All support welcome and here’s hoping to yet another great game of football from both sides.

KILSHANNIG CELEBRATE MINOR SUCCESS – Kilshannig ladies’ football celebrated with their very own Aisling Healy in the club recently. Aishling’s family and friends were delighted to be a part of such a special night. Also present was fellow player Róisín Duffy and Teresa Meaney of the teams management. It was great to honour Aisling in front of her own club with the two cups they won this year.

Having successfully won the Minor Munster and all-Ireland Championships in 2017 Aisling played her part through the year. Aisling had been injured for some time during the year but still managed to score a point in the final in Tullamore Co Offaly on the day.

The club players of all ages from the junior grade down were delighted to see and hold these the two cups on the night. There was music, tea, coffee, snacks etc all provided by the club volunteers and it was marked with a questions and answers session with club chairman Pascal Ring. Pascal said ‘it was great to get a feel for what the players do every week and to show our younger players what it takes’

The night was also covered by Unity Media Network, Cork’s newest online TV and Radio website. One of the clubs trainers, Alan Gould is involved in the site and a fantastic video has been put together by them on their website. Thanks to Brian o Sullivan as well for their great finished product. The video can be seen on unitymedianetwork.com.

TOUR OF CEMETERY

On August 21, a crowd of over 75 people assembled at the above cemetery for a guided tour conducted by Donie O’Sullivan. This is one of many old historic cemeteries that were surveyed in great detail as part of an IRD Duhallow project to make inscriptions and headstone photos available worldwide on the website historicgraves.com.

Many facets of local history going right back to c.550 AD when St Seannach established a major ecclesiastical settlement in the area were aired. A surprise to many people was to hear about the most unlikely of relationships between Nano Nagle and Princess Diana, who both can trace their maternal line directly back to the Lombard family of Lombardstown, many of whom are buried in Kilshannig.

The histories of many other notable people connected with the cemetery were also discussed and people were amazed at how much history was contained within the four wall of this one acre cemetery. The cemetery surveys are now a treasure trove for emigrants from Duhallow wishing to trace their ancestors.

YOUTH CYCLING

Denis Murphy, Seán Tarrant, Patrick Morley and Arnaud Dimoulin all of Kilshannig and members of O’Leary Stone Kanturk Cycling Club competed in the Youth National Cycling Championships in Carlow recently. Denis Murphy won bronze in the under-16 Road race and also won team gold in under-16 Time Trial and under-16 Road Race. Seán Tarrant, Patrick Morley and Arnaud Dimoulin also won team medals in their respective age categories. Well done to all the boys.

Special thanks to the main men Tadgh Finnegan, Pa O’Donoghue, Bill Sexton and Conor Curran, who made sure we had plenty of everything for sale. The day was a great success with €1,500 raised.
